How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

Someone mentioned NOT throwing CR123 cells in the trash after they're done. So what do you do with yours?

Re: How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

First they last forever in the darn X5T, then I drop them in a baggie for awhile, and then drop them off when my town does the quarterly crazy thing recycling - all sorts of batteries, computers, appliances, monitors and TVs, thermometers, everything.

I understand that unlike NiCd, silver oxide, or mercury cells, lithium cells like 123s are not recyclable, but should be destroyed at hazardous waste incinerators. I believe this is true for LiOn rechargeables, too. But both should go to your local town or county recycling center.

And just FYI, since my wife had recently asked me, regular alkalines have not contained mercury for over a decade and are considered household trash.

Also, I think this should probably be moved to the:
Flashlight Electronics - Batteries Included
forum, instead of the Arc one.

My CR123 ... I just throw them in the trash ... the "recycled" ones end up there anyway and the whole procedure isn't evergy efficient if it is used at all ...

To explain it to non german CPFers :
Here in Germany it is strictly forbidden to throw any batteries in the trash .

I´m "easy going " as well , if you know what I mean .

If you do it , don´t talk about it . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/poke2.gif

I've never thrown any away. (Do I need to see a therapist?)

Just curious, how would whoever enforces this rule know if you're throwing batts out with the regular trash? What would be the punishment?

Re: How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

Most Li cells do not contain hazardous materials when empty.
But local laws may treat all cells similar (assuming the end user is too stupit to tell the difference).

Some time ago some Li cells (LiSO2) came with the advise to put them into land fills....

Re: How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

Actually guys, lithium cells do get recycled if you turn them in to a battery store. In a land fill the lithium can leach into the water table; not something you want to drink a lot of as it also reacts and combines with all kinds of stuff.

Lithium batteries get smashed/crushed/shreaded and the seperated lithium compounds get used in the manufacture of concrete.

Proper disposal and recycling is a moral/ethical decision each person has to make. Do you care about the health of your children, their children, future generations, or possibly even yourself ?

Where I live our water comes from wells and I really don't want to be told someday "Don't drink the water" like in other parts of the country where ground water pollution is a problem.

My advice is use rechargeables whenever possible and dispose of spent primary cells properly. Throwing hazardous crap in a landfill hole is only delaying the future adverse impact a few years; landfill liners don't even last 60 years.

Re: How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

I toss them in the bin at my Photoshop.
Most shops that sell batteries also take them in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Oh, I did not intend to tell people to do that! I just posted it to show how careless we all were 20 years ago!

They in this same information sheet they also claimed that they do not contain any material which could cause a problem in the ground water.
And I'm shure we have a different look at it now!

Anyway, while it is not good for the environment, they should be the lowest harm to it from all chemistries.

So just in case you loose some of your cells in the woods accidently....

Re: How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

Most places who sell special batteries have a bin but I'm afraid these guys just do that to give you the illusion they care.
I'm keeping all my empty lithium tyonil chloride cells until I find a way to be sure they don't end up in the garbage.

Re: How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

I've found that people throw any kind of batteries into those recyclng bins, regardless of the signs specifying a specific chemistry only.

Actually, if you want a loadfull of batts to use in your Infinity light, go poke around in one of those bins...

Re: How do YOU dispose of your CR123\'s?

I've never been sure of how to properly or even legally dispose of them. So just to be safe, I put them in my neighbor's trash instead so I don't get into any trouble.

...... < kidding, peoples > /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
