how to remove chuck?

I bought this really nice Yuasa Super Indexer and I am in the process of cleaning/adjusting it, but even after removing the 3 chuck holding screws and the 3 adjust-tru screws, it still does not come out. The chuck does separate from the base by 50-100 mills, then stops. Any ideas/suggestions?

A burr from the adjust-tru screws, maybe???

Can you set the assembly on your lathe (chuck to chuck), and fashion a way to pull gently with the tailstock ram?

A controlled straight pull so to speak.

Sweet I bid on a few of those myself but the always end up doube the amount I want to spend :(

The tightly fitted parts, aided by dried grease, can be difficult. If your wife won't kill you, set the kitchen oven to the lowest temp setting, something around 200 deg F. Put a large piece of aluminum foil under the chuck to catch the "drippings". Let it heat soak overnight & try again.

Plan B (if the heat soak doesn't work) is to submerge the entire assembly in a bucket of kerosene for a few days & see if that loosens it up.

Plan C requires an acetylene wrench :confused:

That might very well be the case. I am letting WD-40 soak for a while longer to see what happens.

The whole assembly is quite heavy but I will see what I can do. I like the pull-away idea.

I really got lucky on this one. Besides the surface needing a good cleaning, this one is tight as a drum, and it came with the adjust-tru chuck and the matching adjustable tailstock . Barry estimated this was well over $3,000 setup which I picked up for about $700 or so on Ebay about 3-4 months ago.

I won't even try the oven trick with my wife, but, I will leave stuff soaked with WD-40 overnight, and re-lube for a couple of days to give the crud // old grease a chance to soften.

Man, you were not kidding when you helped me get this one. Everything seems fitted - little or no play on most everything, yet it rotates easily and without drag/friction. Once cleaned and lubed, it will be freaking awesome to use.

This was almost verbatim the same problem I had when I was "restoring" the Adjust Tru Buck Chuck I got 5-6 months ago :crazy:

Another thought, put the jaws back in, chuck a nut or better still a coupler nut and run some threaded rod through...This would give an easy to control, straight up pull.

Of course, I had to adapt it a little ...

I first tried chucking the coupler, but it is just too smooth - you can see the light scratch marks that the chuck gave it:

So I then turned to my lathe, and turned down enough to leave a larger diameter at the bottom of the jaws (towards the mounting surface), while still allowing a good grip while I rotate the top (although these couplers are hardened, it was almost too easy to cut them with the CNMG insert for steel and the mister):

And after a few turns, it finally came off:

Here is the mounting surface after being cleaned. Yes, there were small burs on the 3 set-through points - that and the crud & dried grease was keeping everything tight, plus the fit of the parts is actually really good as well:

Now, another interesting thing, is that those adjust-true screws don't contact the mounting plate directly - they push fitted pins instead. Here is the inside of the chuck once cleaned:

I tried briefly to open the chuck to clean/grease/lube the interior, but as soon as I removed the 3 outer/larger screws, the pinion pieces just come out, which gives me complete access to clean/lube the interior as I wanted - which as you can see in the second photo is really needed (that screw in front is what keeps them in place):

All cleaned and lubed now. Not all stains in the steel surfaces are gone, but it it even smoother now. Each jaw on the chuck is not only numbered 1 through 3, but each one is stamped with the serial number of the chuck. Also, the whole indexer assembly and tailstock (which appears not even used) have matching numbers as well.
