Ok I've had this light for about a year and use it quite a bit, but am wanting to upgrade, it's got the r2 led on a star board, 20mm i believe and what should be a 1amp two mode driver, it takes either two 123's or one 18650. I'd like to stay with a star board and change the driver if necessary, what I like about this light is it's a one trick pony, massive throw in a tight spot. Is the xpg r5 what I want or is something better out there now? I've already go several p7 lights so I'm not wanting to go that way. On another note I've ordered an xpg r5 and want to know what driver you reccomend for two nimh operation. Thanks, Tim.

I tried R5 in HS-802, and you definitely get more output light, but less throw. I modded mine with DX 7882 driver and slightly overdriven R2 (1.3 A at led). Add to this 42.5 x 1.9 mm AR coated lens from Flashlightlens, and you have the winning combination.

Thanks for replying, did you get less
throw because it's a larger led or because the focus was off compared to the r2? I was hoping to not lose throw.

I changed out the LED and forward driver board on my HS-802 (there's also a circuit board in the tailcap that controls high/low functionality).

I put in a Cree Q5 and this driver board:

It wasn't a huge difference but it is brighter now with just a tad more throw.

R2 ???? Im not so sure ???

I swapped drivers with mine and output went up a little , I then swapped in a Cree Q5 and output went up more !

170 Stock , 187 new driver , 200 with new Q5 + the new driver .

Im going to go buy a R2 in a day or so , I dont know ? about the R2 claim .
Not even close to any R2 I currently own , not even close .

Love the throw .

Throw in a AMC7135 1400mA board and a R2 [ a real one ] and see how you go .

Took my own advise : for the 802 .

Lumen output is up to 240 or there abouts , and if anything there may have been a slight drop in throw , but the beam and hotspot are much cleaner .

Might leave as is , and buy another thrower .

Does anyone know if I can get a forward-clicky for this?

And it is supposed to be a XR-E R2 WC (230 lumens) I wonder is there is a higher bin than R2 for an XR-E.

Its a nice light.

I received my HS-802 today (the two-mode version from DX) and first of all I have to say WOW! This is a very nicely designed, well machined torch of higher quality than I was expecting, and that reflector is just beautiful.

Now that that's out of the way... I removed the bezel, lens and reflector to reveal the pill, which unscrwed easily by turning it from the battery side (clockwise from the battery side to pop it out of the head side). The 16mm XRE star had plenty of room around it. I measured 20mm internal pill diameter with calipers, so it looks like an SSR star will fit after all, although, it may require filing down the star thickness if I don't break the glue on the head threads to buy more room between the lens and pill base. (The SSR stars are much thicker than the tiny XRE star it came with.) I'll have to drill new holes 'cause a 20mm star would cover the existing holes.

I'm really looking forward to this mod. (I might drop an XP-G in first, just to see what that looks like, and then move up to the SSR-50.) First thing's first, I've got to replace that two mode switch with a forward click one mode.
