Hi there!

I know that CPF is a good place to know about a new LED bin, new light models, to meet some friends... but, in my opinion, it´s the BEST place to learn.

Yes, learn... LEARN about lights.

In the last days I was reading some posts, and I saw a lot of terms that I just can´t imagine what it is... So, please, can you help me with my doubts? (forgive me about my "noobness")

1 - What the heck is a "integrating sphere" (something like that!)?? How does it work?

2 - What is a Malkoff M60 Q5? Is it a light? Is it a upgrade? How can I use it? Who is Malkoff?

3 - What is these Surefire KL5, KX1, KX2?? How can I use it?

4 - Really... was O.J. guilty or innocent?

Again, I joined CPF just some months ago, and I still have a lot to learn. I´m just some kind of apprentice near some of you guys.

Thanks in advance for all the answers.

An Integrating Sphere is a device used to measure total lumens. It's basically a big sphere that you can put a light into, and it has a sensor that takes a reading. I hear they are expensive, and have to be calibrated, etc.

The Malkoff M60 Q5 is a Surefire P60 style drop in, that can be used in lights that take P60 style drop ins. They are in high demand, and hard to snag:

I'll let a Surefire expert handle #3, and #4, I don't care about OJ. :)

Thanks Wade... you´re the man!
The OJ thing was just a joke...

But... what is a "drop in" ?

(I am ashamed of my ignorance!)

Wow Tigerhawk... that is exactly I was looking for!
Thanks a lot!

Well Federal, if you own a 6P style surefire, like the 6P, 9P, C2, and so on, you will see the P60 lamp assembly yes? ie: The reflector+bulb.

A drop in is basically a whole reflector assembly, that you literally just "drop into" the light, no other modification needed.the Malkoff M60 is just one example or a really top-notch drop-in

Got it Crenshaw... it is like an upgrade. You just buy and install it.

And what about those SF KL-something heads ?

KL something heads are basically LED conversion heads for surefire lights. I myself am not too sure about what goes with what, but people use them generally to "lego" that is, to mix and match with stuff that fits. Like a E2E body with K(whatever)L head with Aleph Tail, stuff like that. so when someone asks is a KL1 will lego to a C2, they are asking if the KL1 head will fit on a c2 body, which it wont. :)

Federal, if you want to see what an integrating sphere looks like have a look here:

PS: thanks for your last PM. :)
Wait, is that an IS for $300? Does it come with everything needed, or is it like those Christmas tree starter kits that consist of a single ornament (just add the tree)? I thought ISs cost several grand.

My understanding is that the small sphere offered by Torontosurplus is a second hand sphere without measuring equipment.

If you have a look around on the net you learn that spheres are available in sizes ranging from a few inches to several feet in diametre. It is likely that a laboratory that tests lights from several sources has a rather large size sphere and this is IMO the origin of the rumor about the huge price tag of this piece of equipment. A company making flashlights has probably just the need for a 10'' sphere which can not cost more than a very few thousands.

As an example:

The KL5 is an LED head offered as an upgrade for Surefire C-series lights. It has a LuxV LED and reflector that produces around 100 lumens...this head comes "stock" on the Surefire L5

The KX heads are for Surefire's E-series. I am not positive on the specs but I do know that they use an optic and Cree LED's.

All you need to know about the Malkoff is if you have a light that takes a P60 sized lamp assembly, you NEED to get yourself one!! They have amazing output :D

Ciao Kilovolt!
Thanks for the answers here.
The integrating sphere is strange... looks like a machine that I saw here in our Planetary.

Thanks for the answers too.

O.J. was found NOT guilty. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean "innocent", mind you. :naughty:
