Been to Radioshack. Saw the Icon Rogue. The sales guy there really talked it up. 100 lumens, runs on 2 AAs. Tested the beam. Seemed, well, decent. Then as I played with it, the dimmer it got, despite boasting in the package that it is regulated. I'm proud because I passed it up.

Anyone got the goods on this light?

The dimming is actually by design believe it or not. It has been detailed here in Selfbuilt's review of the light:

So, don't be proud, be better informed :nana:

This kind of regulation is perfect for the non-flashaholics as it conserves battery power when the eyes adapt to the darkness and prolongs runtime. Very useful, and does not cost brainpower. I do like clever engineering. :)

You got me. :grin2:

But, I am still proud. The review confirmed everything--the light has a bad runtime, not at all great brightness, and seriously, you had to be there (unless you have the light or have played with it long) to see this baby drop right off in power when used. Really disappointing.

I think the batteries were likely near dead. The review I referenced showed that it would take it running for at least 10-15 minutes before the human eye could perceive any change in light output.

I've never noticed mine dropping in brightness. I haven't had
it long enough to run down the first set of batteries though.
But I am proud of you! It is hard for any one on this board to
turn down any sort of light! I know I saw one at Radio Shack and
couldn't resist! They are decent lights, but The PWM on low is pretty rough.

Yeah, I'm going to chime in as well and say that if you had the thing dim down quickly to where you would notice it within the time you play with it in the store, those cells were likely fairly dead already. I've tested out three Icon's and they only do that at the end of their useful lifespan. The rest of the time, the dimming is completely unnoticeable by me. My wife loves hers as does my Mother. Both are non-flashaholics that just need the ability to see on command.

What they said. If it dropped right off the battery were dead. In use, those lights are really well thought out and they deliver what they promise, brightness included.

My old man and my mother moth got one from me. Perfect for those people. :)

The drop in output as a result of the regulations is very hard to notice in normal usage. It's extremely well implemented.

The behaviour you describe is likely due to bad batteries, or perhaps a faulty Rogue. I would be inclined to think it's the former based on my (fairly extensive) use of ICON lights.

Tempest
