Hello, i have 3 different bin cree leds, but all look identical. So, the only way to see the bin is via lumens rating test?
All of them have the silver small core. Also, all of them are bought from DX. I will have to try and test them by some way because i wanna see if they are fooling us.
Has anybody else seen silver small core cree P4? thanks!

All bins look identical from P4 and up (old P4's had only 3 bond wires, but newer ones have 4). That's because they are all the XR-E model, which is physically identical in appearance, and are graded post-production into their bins.

The "silver core" or "yellow/phosphor core" only tells you where it was assembled, either in North Carolina or China.

Remember also that most manufacturers only quote minimum bin specs, so it's not out of the question to order say a P4 and get a Q2 or Q4 bin (Fenix is known to do this)

When the production process is changed (in this case from an all yellow looking inside to a more silver looking inside) this is changed for the whole line, going from P4 to R2. So there is not physical way to know whether they sent you a P4, R2, Q5 or whatever. You can send them to CPF members who have the equipment to test this, I can do it if you want (I'm still working on the process of testing, so far I can give a rough estimate and no exact number yet, but close enough to see which bin). Another side note : from several experiences I don't trust KaiDomain and DealExtreme anymore, they sent me several Cree XR-E's which they sold as Q5's but performed as P4's or at best as low Q2's. If you want real high bins, it's better to only order from premium resellers or some folks on the forums which sell these.

My P4 has an "all yellow" emitter. However, the R2 I recently obtained has a silver ring and yellow core. YMMV

I have three different P4 emitters (Task Force, DX6090 module, Romisen RC-C3).

The task force and RC-C3 are yellow backed 4-wire designs.
The DX6090 module is a silver backed 4-wire design.

its impossible to tell which bare emitter is most efficient in such drastically different applications. FWIW, the silver-backed P4 physically looks IDENTICAL to the silver backed R2 in my other drop in, yet the R2 is noticeably brighter using the same driver and reflector.

So, based on my own experiences the brightness differences at least between P4 and R2 is easy to see, when used in an identical application.

Note to self... when ordering multiple emitters from DX, place separate orders for each BIN. Then again, I would only buy them from a trusted www retailer... not KD, DX or ebay.
