I have a couple of LED lights that have 5mm LEDs in them.

When I look straight down on them, you can see the yellow phosphor.

I have a bunch of loose Nichia DS and GS LEDs that also have this yellow phosphor when you look straight down on them.

Do the generic 5mm LEDs also have this yellow phosphor, or is it unique to Nichia LEDs?

The only other loose 5mm LEDs I have a red ones, and they do not have the yellow phospor.

All white leds using blue led + phosphor I've seen, have a yellow looking phosphor.

With the exception to the GS, I think there are no identifiable marks to differentiate Nichia vs generic

Current (maximum drive) might be one difference, cheaper white LEDs (5mm and 3mm that is) tend to not have drive currents over ~20mA.

What is the mark that identifies the GS? The fact that it is a bit taller?

I have some loose DS and GS LEDs, and when viewed next to each other, the GS LED is taller by a couple of millimetres.

That be it. I also think the GS's are a bit narrow at the tip (different profile). Also, if you light them up at very low current, you can see the rectangular die.
