Guys, I'm in the process of putting together a Repulsory Ray embedded within a Colossus body.

I'm now at a roadblock and need to hear some suggestions.
With the Colossus head there are so much flexibility in term of real estate, heat sinking, and power that makes it very hard for me to decides on the "FINAL" layout :banghead:

Here are the current layout contenders. There are many other options available but they didn't meet my basic requirements for the light.

layoutxt7.jpg

=== Layout #1 ===
6x 30mm reflector/optic
1x 36mm reflector

Pros:
- Potentially 5000+ lumens output
- Readily available reflector/optic
- Larger optic capability for throw
Cons:
- Odd # of LED cause addt'l requirement for driver
- Heaviest Heatsink of all

=== Layout #2 ===
4x 38mm reflector
5x 17mm reflector/optic

Pros:
- Potentially 6500+ lumen output
- Readily available reflector/optic (lower cost)
Cons:
- Odd # of LED cause addt'l requirement for driver
- Heaviest Heatsink of all

=== Layout #3 ===
3x 45mm reflector
3x 20mm optic

Pros:
- Lowest demand on converter/power
- LARGE reflector size
- Lightest HS of the group
Cons:
- Scarcity of 45mm reflector
- Least output (3000+ lumens)

Light Requirement ===
1) The ULTIMATE LED LIGHT ... well at least for now.
2) At least 3000+ lumen
3) Variable brightness
4) At least 10 mins runtime (you know who I'm aiming this light against)
5) No optic/reflector smaller than 17mm
6) At least 3x optic/reflector larger than 25mm for improved throw.
7) Powered by 4x or 8x 18650 (preferably 4x)
8) Last but not least ... COST and RE-DESIGN is a very very small factor. Considering the cost of the host and labor

:buddies: :drunk:
Thanks for your input.

Lordy knows I love to see a light throw but, I've got some high-powered HIDs that won't be beat in this area.....at least not for now. I went for an even balance---call me chicken!

I like design number two the best. The four large reflectors will throw pretty well with XR-E's. The remaining smaller ones can be filled with MC-E's for a sweet wall of light. I'm all in for design number two. The availability of the reflectors is an extra plus. IMO the larger reflectors in design three won't make that much of a difference over the ones in design two.

I voted for throw, but how about this arrangement in option 2:

P7s in the 4x 38mm reflectors.

R/O Rebels in the 17mm reflectors.

Two separate circuits and drivers, with the P7s on a LedZeppelin-type pot, and the R/O rebels on constant current.

At lower P7 levels, the R/O is more apparent, but as the P7s are cranked up, they continue to provide color balance, just not as much.

Hang the head on a 19" long tube carrying 4x 42120 LiFePO4 "M" cells at 4.3V/10aH. :devil:

One last thing...I'd like it in black, please. :poke:

Funny...

I have had a similar idea for a while now using these optics with the MC-E
2.5 degree

5 degree

I have some samples comming but no means to try them since i dont have a host and dont have any MC-E emitters...LOL
I asked for some other optics aswell in diffrent angles.

My initial plan was to have someone help me make a 7x MC-E light similar to the Helios.Using your Battery packs.

Machining such a beast requires skills i dont have and the planning are only on a piece of paper for now and i think it will probably stay that way as i dont know how to proceeed..

I understand this thread is to make your light a better led host and im all for that.
Those optics i linked to looks very interesting and would add lots of throw for those that like that and maybe some other smaller optics could be used with Seoul emitters or CREE...dunno..

I think Layout 3 would be best if using the optics i linked to.
With 3 McR19XR reflector on the sides for flood.
Or any other of the optics in the size of max 20mm diameter.

Layout 2 could work wit the same 2.5 degree optics... the widest point is 37.5mm in diameter.
needs to be tryed to know for sure though..

I could send you the optics when i get them if you want.
4x 2.5 Degree Optics with the MC-E + 5x 17mm optics/reflectors should be awsome.
Estimated 4000 Lumens maybe...
The first Led light in this caliber with lots of throw.
Dang i want one...
The D2DIM or similar would be kickass as a driver.

I noticed that cmacclel has posted a thread in the Machining subforum that he is making these heatsinks. What design have you decided upon? Or is that a surprise and we'll find out when we find out?

Thanks,
Spencer

Already have a 3600 LU 18650 light and would love the 6500 lu Beast:devil:---all I need is 30 min or more of run time...

My vote is for layout no.2 Throw and output. I like the idea of 6500 lumens. thats some serious output, out of a serious light.
