It's hard to say. I feel like for me it is just a fun hobby that I enjoy quite a bit. Although I do think I have an addiction to collect different things, and have my entire life. It started with baseball/basketball cards, then Starter hats, then Nike shoes, then vintage video games, and I've now been on flashlights for around 2.5 years.
I honestly don't think that it's harmful in any way because I spend a small amount of money each year, and only buy lights I REALLY want (which is a relatively small number of them). I also try to buy lights that I can truly justify because they are different from anything else I have, and aren't just more of the same.
Once in a while I'll read a pic of a collection from someone who has a serious problem, or has WAY too much money to waste!
 
It's a hobby for me and I'm lucky enough to do things that actually require flashlights (work, play). My limitation is my budget, so I have to watch what I do pretty closely. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed because my attention is taken up by other things, but I'm close.

I don't even remember how I got here (to CPF)! My first memories are of buying an Ultrafire 12v 4x123 light and being so impressed I bought a few for my brother. Fast forward a bit, and it's the Golston 7W craze, of which I bought a few (again). Then I somehow got away for some time, only to be sucked back in, at the Cree craze, and the P60 LED drop in wave and you guessed it I now own several. I will say though that it certainly isn't the worst hobby out there... My lights have done everything from helping find dropped stuff in parking lots, under car seats etc, provided backup lighting during a blackout, warded off evil sprits... ok maybe not evil sprits but it DID ward off some seemingly no-gooders lurking in the dark near my car once!

For me it's for fun, but may turn to an addiction, and probably lead me to obsession.

I too have an addiction to collecting stuff, over the years it's been Yoyo's, Cameras, Videos, Sci Fi magazines, Lighters, Match cases, Matches, Knives, Air guns, Fountain Pens, Cigarette boxes, Cigarette cases, Cigars, Pipes, Sound Effects, Microphones, Music on LP or CD or MP3 - etc etc. But it all started with torches, really since I can remember anything at all.

The others obsessions are fads, torches are the real deal!:thumbsup::welcome::shrug:

I must admit I always have some attraction to flashlight. For years, that interest never developed too far as there was nothing out in the mainstream market that would attracts me. In another word, the quality was not there. The chain reaction that lead me to CPF is this - I saw Led Lenser in one of the shop, it was fascinating, but very expensive in Australia. I went to ebay and google looking for Led Lenser. I end up at FlashlightReview.com. It leads me to CPF. I have a lot of fun with various lights. I appreciate them and I count myself fortunate to have this experience. I have extensive use for some of the torches and headlamps at work. It is also a good gift present for some unenlighten friends and families. You will find CPF is very special. There are some very generous members here. You actually feel at home :party:.
 
I agree with you LA OZ, this place is very friendly and members are generous!

As to being addicted/obsessed.. well. I guess I am addicted, but who here isn't? It's a lot of fun though and a useful obsession, even the unenlightened see it as useful when the power goes out.

For me it started when I googled/ebay'd for more information on a particular light I'd picked up in a gadget store, and I ended up at CPF. I browsed for a bit, joined, and purchased a light the same week. And it got much, much worse from there! I've always been interested in flashlights for a reason I've never understood, but it didn't have a chance to develop because until I found CPF I didn't know about the variety of decent lights on offer.

At first I thought it was a relaxing hobby to collect and buy stuff you want. But once in a while I just feel sick! I feel that I have wasted my money on stuff i dont use... And that I only want stuff that I need and use.

i dont need 10+ lights, i dont even need more than 3. But I still have more than that.

So for the moment it feels like an obsession, and addiction. Like a junkie :)

I dont need a new toy, I NEED a new fix!

Seriously, for me I think this hobby has got to me! I think its best to lay off for a while...

But it sure is fun to buy stuff! need to relax....goooosfraba....
 
I was able to lay back for 6 months until Surefire bring out many mix of addictive potions. I need to work a bit harder :poke:, it won't kill me :devil:, but my wife will :eek:.
 
About the same for me, I held off buying lights for 6 months, then I suddenly buy 3 in one go >_>
 
yeah, Im waiting on some of the new from SureFire too...

I hope they will shut me up for a while! :)

Aiming for the UB2 and a P61L, and maybe a KL9.
 
What's funny is I always say my next purchase will probably be my last for a while. I had no intentions of buying many lights this year or any expensive ones anyway. But SF just had to come up with the UA2 didn't they
