There seems to be a consensus that the XP-E will out-throw the XP-G, everything else being equal. Is the difference in throw actually significant between the two? Any distance comparisons?

With respect to throw, I believe:
XR-E > XP-E > XP-G
with the XR-E R2 being the best Cree thrower.
It's not quite that simple. The XP-E has an R3 bin while the XR-E does not. It depends on whether or not the light has a reflector or a lens. It also depends on the drive level. There's too many factors to make an across the board statement like that. With respect to throw, I believe:

Yes it is significant. I can't give you numbers but I know my T20C2 with R2 throws much further than the one with XP-G. For all purposes but throw I prefer the XP-G. (as long as it isn't green)
