There seems to be a consensus that the XP-E will out-throw the XP-G, everything else being equal. Is the difference in throw actually significant between the two? Any distance comparisons?

Yes it is significant. I can't give you numbers but I know my T20C2 with R2 throws much further than the one with XP-G. For all purposes but throw I prefer the XP-G. (as long as it isn't green)

I second RecDNA on this one. I do not think the lights out now with XP-G are good throwers, but they do have wider concentrated spots so you get a combination of flood and throw. XP-E for throw definitely.

With respect to throw, I believe:
XR-E > XP-E > XP-G

with the XR-E R2 being the best Cree thrower.

With the XR-E put into the equation, yes the XR-E would out throw the XP-E. But between the 2 (XP-E or XP-G) the XP-E would take the crown.

I have an EagleTac T20C2 MKII with an XP-G and a Jetbeam RRT-2 with an XR-E. I live on a multi acre property and really use the throw. The two lights are darn near the same size with nearly the same size head and reflector. I really have to use my imagination to see one out throw the other. The XP-G illimunitaes more of the area at distance where the XR-E throws just slightly farther. The difference betwen the two in the real world is very little. I will have to do some outdoor bram shots soon. You would be amazed at how similar the two are (at least in these two lights).

It's not quite that simple. The XP-E has an R3 bin while the XR-E does not. It depends on whether or not the light has a reflector or a lens. It also depends on the drive level. There's too many factors to make an across the board statement like that.

Sorry. I should have specified, all else being equal, the XR-E has the most throw potential.

Do I understand correctly that you have the XP-G in a T20C2 as well and are comparing the two?
