Is there a "smart" AA battery charger which operates from 12v cigarette lighter?

Four bays with independent charging would be nice, but two independent bays would suffice, too. I would use my BC-900 with an inverter, but it seems that most 12v-110v inverters basically warn that the inverter could burn up some smart battery chargers of any type. not sure what that is about, either. If you've seen the warnings, please explain to me. Thanks.

Yes. There are lots of them. In fact many chargers come with a 12V wall wart and a car connector.

The Maha C-9000 is smart and can be used with a 12v power lead.

The Maha/Powerex C9000 uses a 12V DC power supply - Thomas Distributing offers an option for a cigarette lighter lead for it.

Thanks for the replies, but I see I could have been clearer. Smaller is better, as this needs to fit in my motorcycle tank bag and still have room for other stuff. The C9000 is a bit... large!

Yes, I know there are many chargers out there which come with 12v lighter plug, but I am not familiar with any that are smart and with independent cell monitoring.

Thanks. Any other suggestions?

Well, - the C9000 meets this requirement - but if you want one smaller than that, Maha's C401FS might suit you.

Cheers

As a general rule, if they're not trickle chargers then they're smart. These things were 'smart' 30-odd years ago when the chips first appeared. Now they're just what you get when you ask for a battery charger.

I know it's nice to be able to charge or monitor a single cell on the odd occasion, but it's not really necessary in the same way with NiMh or NiCd as it is with lithiums particularly when the cells are not assembled into packs. Most people balance their cells (if they feel it's necessary) by leaving them on trickle for a while and/or using them as pairs or quads.

You can get a cheap, light, small 2/4 bay charger in most supermarkets that will do everything most people need with AAs for under $20. Why look any further?

I have been pleased with the MQH03 as a travel/quick charger. Mine came with the 12v dc car adapter. It doesn't top off the cells like the c9000 nor does it over heat them like other fast chargers do. Simple, good quality, compact, fast charger IMO.

It's quite a bit larger than a typical travel charger since it charges/discharges 8 AA cells, but the Titanium Innovations M-8800 will work on 12V DC or 110V AC:

I used mine to charge up my Sanyo Eneloops in the car on my recent road trip to Disneyland and it worked perfectly.

Dang it, what a difference two and a half years makes since I posted this question! I long ago discovered the Duracell mobile charger, which fit my bill perfectly. I now have five of them.

I used my rayovac 1 hr charger during a 4 day outage dec 2007, even though it is harder on batteries it charges them faster which makes for needing less batteries during outages if you use them up fast

Sony BCG34HVE4F, independent charging slots, ~1000mA charging current for 2 cells, ~500mA for 4 cells, no trickle, 12V cigarette lighter plug included, has been available for years.

MAHA C401FS is nice and small and comes with a carrying case and the 12v and 120v adapters. Its fast (1 hour mode) is a little too fast but if you really needed batteries charged in a hurry is there if you need it.

Re: Is there a "smart" AA battery charger which operates from 12v cigarette lighter?

Are there any chargers (that work off 12v) that can display capacity left in the batteries? like the la crosse bc-900 but off 12v?

How accurately?
Do you mean just instant three stage reading, or do you mean the cell capacity test feature?
