Thanks Ken, good to know. That's another reason why we don't answer our home phone. We let the answering machine screen all our calls. It saves us so much time.

He lied. When a company gets your phone number they have a year to use that number for marketing purposes. It overrides the do-not-call rules. Clerks are required to get the numbers for corporate, and graded on how well they do. Luckily, any ten digit number will satisfy them.

Honestly though, the reason they ask "is anything wrong with it?" is because it's usually a valid question, and it's not worth the extra brainpower to think about which instances it makes sense to ask the question. Working in retail is thankless enough, there's no point putting effort into it.
