He lied. When a company gets your phone number they have a year to use that number for marketing purposes. It overrides the do-not-call rules. Clerks are required to get the numbers for corporate, and graded on how well they do. Luckily, any ten digit number will satisfy them.

Haven't shopped at Rat Shack in 10+ years, but back when I did there was no such thing as a do-not-call registry and they surely never called me - although they may have sold the number to telemarketers.

Honestly though, the reason they ask "is anything wrong with it?" is because it's usually a valid question, and it's not worth the extra brainpower to think about which instances it makes sense to ask the question. Working in retail is thankless enough, there's no point putting effort into it.

"Thankless?" More like soul-crushing. The average retail frontline customer-service employee lasts about 6 months - by design. Rather than look for quality people, treat them well, and pay them well enough that they have some incentive to stick around, retailers have collectively determined it's easier to internalize the costs of constant hiring, training, and using employees as scratching posts.
