Is this the World\'s Brightest Flashlight>?

The megaray.... www.megaray.com and http://www.cones.free-online.co.uk/MegaRay%20175.htm

Is that the world's brightest flashlight. It costs $6,500 and you have to setup a meeting with a seller in your area to buy one. Has anyone seen anything (portable) that is that damn bright. That can supposedly light things up miles away. How far do those spotlights that shine in the sky throw a beam? What is the brightest flashlight you have all used?

Mounted spotlights will tend to make the Megaray look like a candle. The Megaray is only capable of putting out 3.8 lux at 1km. In contrast, Spectrolab's CHIS can put out 22.5 lux at 3km.

I have used this light, you strap on the battery pack and unleash the lumens. It gets so hot it requires a fan! If I remember correctly it was so bright it hurt my nightvision just looking at the dust lit up by the beam. It made it difficult to see the what I was aiming at in long range ''testing''

Not sure how far those skylights can throw a beam, but on some nights I've seen them lighting up low clouds. Skytracker models have 2000/4000 watt versions at around 300 million candle power. But none have been brighter than the huge carbon arc searchlight I saw being tested in Fullerton, California. Huge diameter reflector projecting a deep blue beam. My jaw dropped.

If any of you saw Kenshiro's website before it was taken down, you could see that the MaxaBeam actually outthrew the original MegaRay. I don't know how much brighter the new one is but I bet it's only slightly brighter.

Re: Is this the World\'s Brightest Flashlight>?

Oh, I know. I wasn't disrespecting the Micra. I really like the Micra. It's a very nice light. Just felt like saying that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, I just realised what you meant; I actually was talking about light output, not physical features. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Is this the World\'s Brightest Flashlight>?

How do you arrive at your figures? What are the INTENSITY comparisons? (watts/steradian)
A mounted unit cannot be compared with a portable unit.

[typical CPF response]

How do you define 'flash'? How do you define 'bright'? How do you define 'light'? How do you define 'world'? How do you define 'is'?

The lux figures are from the lights' respective spec sheets.

I've heard that the Border Patrol are using these to bleach the clothes of illegals as they cross so they can be identified during daylight hours. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
