I like Luxeons. Oddly though, unless you count the Nite-Ize upgraded Maglites I've given to my parents, I only have one light with a Luxeon in it: my self-upgraded Arc6. Well, after that project I had a spare neutral-white K2 TFFC kicking around and nothing else to do with it, so I modded a generic GDuP light engine with it. I knew it would fit in my Mule, and I originally intended to use it as such, but then Don rolled out some UV light engines and my Mule got converted to wannabe-CSI use.
What to do with the Luxeon GDuP, then? Well, I decided to sell it. But before I posted it in the B/S/T, I swapped it into my Haiku for the heck of it. I almost cringed as I turned it on, because I was expecting the beam to look awful, but it actually looks really good! It's not quite as bright as the stock LE, owing to the warmer tint and probably a more complex phosphor coating that gives it a higher CRI rating than the Cree Q5, but it's still pretty darn nice. Having had a Sundrop LE for a little while, I'd say it's not quite as high-CRI as the Nichia 083, but definitely a lot brighter, so it makes a nice compromise between high-quantity light (Cree Q5) and high-quality light (Nichia 083).
I bet there's a market for a few of these, put together with better precision than I can manage by hand without giving myself Parkinson's trying to hold things steady.
And now...pics!
