It sure can, and a pox on those stoopid people at Sun for including it in the first place :shakehead You should find the Yahoo toolbar listed in Add/Remove Programs and can uninstall it.

To get Java installed without the Yahoo toolbar, you'd need to run the Java installer and watch for the Custom button. Or do they call it "Advanced?" I'll check on that. Anyway, you can opt out, but they don't show you that option unless you go looking for it.

Also, ask yourself "do I actually need Java? What for?" because Java Runtime is often exploited by the bad guys for malicious purposes. I view it as something to avoid having installed unless it serves an important purpose you can't live without.

I could not find a way to avoid installing the yahoo tool bar,and it does not show up in the add/remove programs menu.

Since I use Firefox it is listed in the extension menu, and can be removed there.

I have tried to get by without java and flash, but they are always required for something I want to do.

I went back and looked, you can uncheck a box to avoid the Yahoo Tool bar.
