from the Shoppe. NG750, TX0J with nice light blueish/white tint.

Did a quick "throw" test on this rainy/cold night and all I can say is wow! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Throws about as good as my SF 6P without that ugly yellow incan tint. 2 stage is nice, works very well. I really like the way that I can set it up for low mode only on button press, low-mode on with button press instant high - very nice!

Needed to work in the contacts a bit to get it to work reliably, lubed up the threads and all is well. Did a flicker test (run on high for a few minutes and then drop down) and it's there, but not too much of a concern.

Custom lights are definitely the way to go and I thank Don and others who have made this light [system] possible. It is a high-quality piece that will last for decades.

It only threw as well as a 6P? Wait until it stops raining and you can see. The Aleph I will stomp a 6P in terms of throw.

I agree with Chop. My Aleph 1 outthrows my 6P by miles. Then it turns around and asks the 6P if it knows if there are any REAL flashlights around...
It is a pretty arrogant torch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

You guys crack me up!! The Aleph I is a kick a$$ light. If you could only have one Aleph, it should be an Aleph I.

Now, where were you guys when I needed you? All the guys in the incand forum talking about how you need an incand to get REAL throw, and I was trying to set them straight. They've obviosly never seen what a true hotrod LED light can do.

I think that this is normal.I would have been surprised of the opposite. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was just thinking were to post some new beamshots /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The "incand. forum" seems a good place /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif!

Tonight i'll take more beamshots but ( as for incand lights ) i have only a SF-E2 and a SF-G2 to compare with .... and also a Minim@g /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif.

Aleph 1 question

Guys, seems like this question fits with this thread.

Can you help me understand something about the Aleph 1's capabilities?

For max throw, one needs a Luxeon III with two 123 cells, driven at >700mA?

What happens with a Luxeon V? I am thinking my next Aleph will be an Aleph 1 with a BB driver that will be able to work with one or two 123 cells.

Re: Aleph 1 question

That's good to hear. Maybe I'll do a incan./Aleph 1 throw comparo sometime though it looks as though Marco will beat me to it. BTW, I credit Marco for his fine comments/review of these lights which ultimately lead to my purchase.

I was looking for something LED, small and bright with good throw and the Aleph 1 1x123 is perfect for my needs. Easy to carry with the ability to reach way out when needed for nightime walks. Two-stage is great for making your presence known to oncoming traffic without blinding the driver. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Aleph 1 question

Geode, the LuxV will produce a very nice medium flood beam with a LOT of light but not the best throw due to the bigger light source of the LuxV. The throw is better than the SF L4 though, for me it is one of the most desirable beams together with the Aleph2 / LuxIII combo.

Here's some pics:

SF L4 stock for comparison:

LuxV W4V in PR (=Aleph1) driven at 500mA

McLuxPR 917 TW0K LuxIII

You see, the throw and hotspot of the highly driven LuxIII in the Aleph1 is tremendous, but sidespill and area coverage is lacking because the corona, albeit large, is relatively weak.

For max throw is better to use a big reflector + lux III drived at 900-1000.

A1 (or A3) Lux III with NG900-1000 for one batt. 123 or one Li-ion ( R123 or Pila )

A1 (or A3) Lux III with DB917 for 2 batts.

If you want to use the BB with one or two batts you need the Lux V, with the Lux III and BB you have to use only one 123 batt. !

Or you could use the Wizard2 with a Lux III , with that convertor you can use one or two 123 batts but the wizard2 don't work very well with the 2-stage switch /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Aleph 1 question

Bernhard and Marco - thanks very much for your clear explanations. I am beginning to see that the LuxIII (driven hard) is analagous to a rifle, and that the LuxV is analagous to a shotgun in terms of output.

Re: Aleph 1 question

Good comparison, Geode! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I need to chime and and say that you don't need to drive the Lux3 all that hard for some serious throw. You'd be amazed at what 500mA gives you with a T-rank in a good reflector. Yes, the harder you drive, the farther it throws... but don't sell the reasonable drive levels short! You stick a 500mA Lux in an A3 head, and the thing will throw into tomorrow. Drive it at 1A, and you might actually be able to see Tuesday from here.

Re: Aleph 1 question

What Darell said, I think. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

Geode, I too like your analogy and have wanted to use it for some time but being a non shooter,I figured I would stumble with the analogy at some point. I believe in regards to the shot gun side, you could also liken chokes to various reflector attributes. We are after all shooting photons here and their trajectory and "mass" or density will have a bearing on how well they hit the intended target. The similarities in shooting have been mentioned in the past and even to the extent of "why" we like to shoot! Whether it's a gun, flashlight or even camera, there is something satisfying in the act itself of "shooting"; not that there is always a real need! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Aleph 1 question

Hit me with your best shot...A3/750mA/Lux V!!Still searching for a nice Lux V for this build.
