I've been lurking around in the McGizmo forum for quite a while now and the Aleph series has always been looking very tempting for me. I've been able to resist buying an Aleph - until now! What did I see today? $162.90 for an Aleph2 2x123 DB917 60ohm in the Sandwich Shoppe - I had to get this thing! After a full year of EDC'ing my SF L4 I want now a new light and after reading so many good things about the LuxIII/Aleph2 combo I went this route. I'm quite confident I have made the right decision. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Cangratz Lexus! You're lucky and I'm jealous. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Let us know how you like it. I'd appreciate a LUX reading at 1-meter if you can do it.

I've got the Aleph I 2x123 w db917 and 60ohm switch. It's a real barn-burner. Extremely functional.

The only problem is that the performance of this light far exceeds anything that I am able to put together in my other mod projects.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mpr.gif I wonder what LUX it takes to burn a barn down. Can you get a reading at 1-meter?

Not sure about lux but if you had a light that pout out about 4000 lumens and you put it right up against the wood you could probably get it to smolder /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good news - we have a solution for you! An A-3 head to screw that 917 LE into. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That or. Build yoruself a space needle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Granted you cant pocket a space needle unless you're wearing cargo pants or something /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif but still.

Congrats on the Aleph purchase by the way. I have yet to get one for myself but i have several of Don's McLux lights and components. Great stuff.

Barn burner? Well how about lighting up highway markers from over a quarter mile away? My Pelican M6 xenon is the only other light I own that can do this.

One neat thing about this light. I live on a rural spread with fields and woods(no streetlights, cars, etc). When walking in the dark woods, the low beam is very functional for lighting up the path. However, when needed, a simple push of the switch lights up the woods like Times Square. Very impressive. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thank you Darrell. I am quite aware of the Aleph 3 head....and of the Aleph II w 1x123 body. They are on the "next purchase" list. Money is currently being raised by selling stuff on Ebay to make $$$.

The deer that hang out around our place at night are not getting much peace these days. However, they are starting to just ignore the high-powered flashlight beams that sweep across the fields every evening.....or at 2AM.

Yah, the coyote i saw a few nights ago didnt take beign lit up by my Thor too well.. he turned and ran real fast. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The beamshot and lux reading:

... vs. the other Aleph heads with the same LE:

Thanks for the beamshots Bernhard!
Hmm...The beamshot with the Aleph2 head doesn't show much spill. Or probably the digicam simply doesn't show it. Being more of a spill/flood guy, I might get a beamshaper for my Aleph2.

Lexus- I think that these lights have a very pronounced spill effect. This may not show up on Bernhards photos but you will see it in actual usage. My AlephI has not only the tight hotspot but also a *very* strong spill- the Aleph2 should have even more spill.

Ah ... yes ... spill there is, but in order to avoid completely overexposed hotspots I had to underexpose the shot. Now ... if you have a relatively dark monitor, you won't see much. Try changing the brightness settings of your monitor or those of the pic in photoshop.

Here are some with overexposed hotspots but a good view of the corona:

... and comparison shots of the complete set-up for the LuxIII and LuxV, both at 917mA using the same LE for each shot.

Wow, those luxV shots are impressive too, what a wall of light. Good think that the Aleph series are modular. Do you know the lux rating of the luxIII in an Aleph2 head with 2x123 DB917 60ohm on low?

Sounds like a nice powerful light.
For comparison. a quarter mile is about 400 meters (440 yards) and a stock TigerLight throws about 409 yards. But it will probably light up a highway marker from further away. I'd like to check though. It pushes about 275 Lumens out the front end!

Lexus,
I just tested 2 ea. Aleph2-2x123-DB917 and they both luxed in at 180 low and 1800 high. These are TX0J's with 60 ohm resistors.

I like that 1:10 ratio. Thanks McGizmo! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
