When I asked my mom what she wanted for Christmas, she told me she wanted a Karaoke system. I know nothing at all about these machines. The only one I have any knowledge of at all is one I saw demonstrated at my local Costco. I remember it was made by a company named Leadsinger and it was basically a microphone you plugged into the video and audio inputs of your t.v. It had chips which held about 65-180 songs(?), and it actually sounded pretty good. I think the cost was around $200.

Does anyone own one of these systems they can recommend or steer me away from? A quick internet search tells me a lot of systems use CDG's. Is this a better way to go than the music chips?

I'm not looking for a professional karaoke system for a club or renting for parties. Just something for my mom to have fun with, and something we can use at family parties and get togethers.

The systems that use CD's/or DVDs and the "Magic Microphone" type are both good. I'm not sure about the Leadsinger type you're talking about, but if you check eBay for "Magic Microphone", you'll see a bunch of different ones and they actually have thousands of songs onboard. I know several people that have the systems that use discs (CDs or DVDs) and they also hold thousands of sounds and they're very good systems. My wife's brother(s) have the microphone type. They're also very good! You can buy additional chips to suit your tastes. 65-180 songs doesn't sounds very good to me, so you might want to check out a different brand, because they really should hold way, way more. (a couple thousand is about normal, I think)
