Well I was talking about the lanyard I want to make for my Ra Twisty and my friend asked for one for a knife he's had for a long time. So I decided I would practice for mine while I made his! This way, I could make a list of the materials I would need and get an idea of how much of everything I could fit in there. I have never tried this before, other than making key fobs, small lanyards for smaller flashlights, and cobra bracelets; and I think it turned out pretty well.

Here is everything I put into the lanyard:

28ft of 20lb test Spiderwire braided fishing line
1 rod of 3" X 3/16" firesteel
2 baitholder fishing hooks
8ft uncut 550 paracord for the king cobra stitch

This shows how I positioned the firesteel and braided the cobra around it.

I spliced the paracord so I could keep from using any end caps because, well, they bother me. :D It didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but I'm sure with some more practice it'll come out cleaner.

Here is the finish of the cobra and you can see the firesteel inside.

This is after wrapping some of the fishing line around the cobra and including one of the two fishing hooks in there.

There's the second hook and the finish of the wrapped fishing line.

Finally finished with the king cobra, looks more like a beetle stomach with all the stuff crammed in there, and almost finished with the lanyard! (or should I say MANyard!!! couldn't help myself)

Just needed to trim down the ends on the king cobra beetle belly and it's all done!

Here is the lanyard, sheath, and knife all together at last!

So, now that I'm finished with the knife lanyard, does anyone have any suggestions for my Ra Twisty lanyard? I already Know I'll be putting a small knife in there and I'm pretty sure it'll be a good fit with the extra-wideness of the cobra since the firsteel is included. I'll only get one shot at this and want to be happy with it forever so I want to make sure I don't leave anything out that would make it better. I hope you enjoyed the pics as much as I enjoyed making this monster. Thanks for your time and comments! :twothumbs

Wow, that is something else. My one question is, why put a knife in the lanyard? I mean you're gonna need a knife to cut the lanyard open in the first place aren't you? But otherwise the idea of having survival type gear built into the lanyard on a knife or light is intriguing.

BTW, know of any links that teach how to do that braiding?

You don't need to cut anything to get into the goodies inside, other than maybe biting a little of the welded (melted) paracord off to unravel it. It pretty much holds itself together under normal wear and tear, but it can be disbanded rather quickly with some fingernail work.

I used both of those videos to figure out how to do it properly. It took me a bit to figure out how it actually worked, but once I got the hang of it, it became a lot easier and I had a good time making a few bracelets.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, special thanks to ~Deicide~ for pointing me in the right direction for those firesteels!

And a thanks to lumafist for talking me into buying paracord to make my own lanyards instead of buying one. I've been having a blast and I feel so crafty!

It's very easy, no knitting involved, just tying knots over and over and over. All it takes is a little paracord, some youtube videos, and time; and I'm glad I got into it.

Very Cool, I overlooked the video the first time, thanks for the heads up, I may give it a try.

Pretty. This subject never ceases to amaze me. I do hope that your survivors find your head.

I assume you're implying I should put a break-away on the lanyard, but I have never seen any merits of using a break-away. While I do not foresee myself needing to have my lanyard break to avoid injury, this thing is all about preparedness.

The whole reason I made this thread was to get suggestions for changes/additions to my lanyard when I make it. I have waited long enough for all my materials to come in anyway, I have no reason waiting a little longer while I find a break-away. Please let me know if I'm missing something without having one.
