I just received a L1D tube for my Fenix P2D light. I also purchased two AW 14500 cells. I already have two Ultrafire 14500 I bought over a week ago for my Nitecore.

The Ultrafire 14500 batteries look about 1/8" taller than the AW 14500's. The Ultrafire batteries will not fit into the L1D tube and allow me to screw the switch all the way down on the tube. The AW battery fits fine.

Is this normal to have this kind of difference in size? I have also noticed the AW's fit much more comfortably in the Nitecore also.

One thing is for sure I will probably only buy AW's in the future.

Thanks

Bill

I guess ultrafire's batteries were manufactured with more lenient tolerances than that of AW's

I heard the cells of AWs were slightly smaller than 14500 to compensate for the added protection circuit. If this is in fact true...then one could say that ultrafires simply used the standard unprotected 14500 and added a circuit on top and shrinkwrapped it, where the extra height may be the PCB.

I dunno...I'm too weak hearted to take apart my AW 14500s and I don't work with ultrafires:ohgeez:

I have two protected UF 14500s and two unprotected ones. They did, in fact, just slap the PCB on the end of an unprotected 14500, without compensating with a shorter cell.

Well isn't that interesting. The longer battery cannot be to good for the battery tension spring. It is really compressing it in the Nightcore and like I said it won't work at all in the L1D. I knew those batteries were too tight even though I had never seen a 14500 battery. I think I will order two more AW14500 and keep the Ultrafires for backup....way back.

Thanks Fallingwater.

long known problem  with long known "solution":

get a copper wire, bend it round to fit into the end cap, put into a vise and make it a bit flat, bend again to have it round, put it into the end cap.

This thing acts as an "extention" to the tube and that 1/2-1 mm should be enought You need

(PS: dont make it too thick. The end cap should still cover the rubber seal. Is better not to have it unscrew itself; sealing of course; and a too wide cap looks awful)

No problem, but I've seen no trouble in the NDI. It's a slight bit harder to screw the light together, but that's all the trouble they give.
