Here's a nice unit that I picked up last night at Target.
It uses this interesting multi-die emitter.
At that price, I really find myself liking it so far.
Power Consumption: This lamp runs off 12V from a small wall wart with an in-line switch. The wart specifies maximum output at 12V x 350mA = 4.2W; according to my Killawatt, it pulls at most 2 watts (though I suspect that this reading is a bit off, being so close to the lower limit of the Killawatt's measuring power).
Output is a 90-degree wide moon beam, with a slight incandescent-yellow fringe; color temp seems to be in the 4000K range to my eye, based on comparisons with a Q3-5A Cree Dereelight and a Seoul USVOI-equipped lantern. Both intensity and color temp roll off gently from center to edge, and the spectrum I can see using a CD suggests it's the high-CRI version of the Intematix C6060. Overall output seems to be in the 80-100 lumen range, comparable to a stock Leatherman Monarch Cree 3xAAA, running off nearly fully charged Eneloops.
It's rather glarey, but it's ideally suited for desk and workbench applications, with the clip base and positionable stalk. I'm using mine on the steel shelf tower which houses my computing and network setup; I have a 30-outlet power strip running from top to bottom, so it's a cinch to relocate this lamp to where I need it.
The black outer housing for the emitter only gets slightly warm after 30 minutes of use.
Overall verdict: I really like the apparent efficiency and utility, and the price is one of the best I've seen yet for consumer LED lights.
