LED Headlamps for Cars? Someday...

I'm using LED's as marker rings for the 2006 BMW 3 series, but not as the actual projection system. Stock Left - My kit Right

Well we can throw 3x Luxeon Rebel 100's in a cluster, there's even a lens for it. If we could keep it cool, it can do 180 lumens (in theory).

A headlight is 800-1500 lumens. Two of the 3x clusters on a side is over 1000 lumens.

So yeah, it's in the ballpark.

Halogen car headlights on new cars produce around 1,000 lumens on low beam and 1,300 on high beam, and HIDs on cars produce up to 2,000 lumens. Cree Q5, SSC U-bin, and the latest Luxeon K2 and Rebel are all rated for over 200 lumens each max. So to get the same amount of light, you'd need 6-8 of them on a side, which is not at all unrealistic. Elektrolumens makes an 8-SSC flashlight with 1,440 lumens.

mds82, your LED marker ring lights are SO COOL! How hard was that mod?

It was just a little kit i built and developed. Original design took a while, but now its pretty easy to make :)

Still waiting on the Cree R2's

There should really be a night time shot of that to get full effect.:poke:
