Lithium/Sulfur Dioxide Battery \"D\" size

Anyone ever use a lithium "D" battery?? I was thinking of putting a few in a 3 D Mag light(to leave in car), but the ones I found(quick google search) are 3 volts each. I'm sure there is a LED that would work, or I could just use a 6 D Maglight bulb. Just an idea.

WOW... the cost of an AA is $2.00, and if Energizer (who holds the patent to 1.5V Lithium cells) were to sell D size, they would easily be three times as much! Just check the Energizer website for new stuff like D cells.

Better check the spec sheets carefully for those 3 volt cells. They may be made for devices like night vision goggles, i.e. intended for low current drain and not suitable for use in a flashlight.

I just wouldn't bother with this. If you want a lithium flashlight in your car, use a CR123 light or maybe a UKE 4AA eLED with four L91's. If you want an ultra-powerful light, get a spotlight that plugs in the cig lighter socket.

Yeah, they're probably rated at 200ma or less. I guess they would make a REALLY long lasting light with a couple 5mm LEDs, but they wouldn't power a bulb or a luxeon.

You guys have your Lithium chemistries confused. The original poster asked about Lithium Sulfer Dioxide "D" cells. These are capable of high rate discharge. They can do 50 amps [!] or so into a short circuit. The only thing to be concerned about w.r.t. heavy drain usage is that the "consumer grade" of these typically are fused at 1 or 2A internally. Even a brief accidental short will render your $15-20 cell useless. Open circuit voltage is 3.02V, loaded in the range of 2.6-2.9V depending on load. They have an incredably flat discharge. These things are way too expensive for general usage if buying at retail. An interesting usage though is 2 in a 2D flashlight using an HPR50 halogen bulb [0.85A/5.2V/90 lm].

Re: Lithium/Sulfur Dioxide Battery \"D\" size

Yah, this comes up from time to time. Try doing a search with something like "+saft +d +lithium" or such.

I actually have some of these which I use in a 2D Mag w/a 6V 1W LS drop in "bulb". HDS still sells these as they were the suggested power source for the Actionlight I. At one point REI was selling them, but I don't think they do at this point.

It is probably importaint to dig up these threads because the were some cautions about the application with these cells. Certainly the big issue is they are NOT cost effective.

I've switched my approach to use 4 x AA lithium cells in an AA to D adapter. A picture and more info here.

Thanks for the info. I wanted to leave a Maglight in my car for "heft". It is hard to swing a 123a light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I have 2 Maglights(3D cells) laying around the house, so I thought about moving one to my car for "emergencies". I have 123a lights in both vehicles already, but sometimes a 3D Maglight is "comfy" in the hand. Oh well, just thought I would ask. Once again, "Thanks!!"
There they cost about $15.00 each.

I do have many of these cells, both the PTC fused ones (that menas the fuse sets itself back) and other ones with the one-way fuse.
I also have lots of 3-packs of them which I just take apart.

For me they very cost effective when I calculate everything.
And beside other things, their cpacity rating is very conservative compared with other cells.
If anybody needs any cells, drop me a line (preferably email).
They work nicely in a MagLite with the appropriate bulb.

I do also have several Li-Thionyl D-cells (the high power ones).

In the meanwhile there are also LiMnO2 D-cells available, but I do not have any of these.

Re: Lithium/Sulfur Dioxide Battery \"D\" size

Blades, if your 3D has the stock bulb in it, upgrade to a Xenon bulb (XPR103 or whatever). That makes quite a difference.

Re: Lithium/Sulfur Dioxide Battery \"D\" size

Use three of these batteries in your 3D M*g and replace bulb with potted WA1274 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/happy14.gif
