Short Essay Question: What do you intend to use this light for?

Camping, lighting up a big area, making people go "wow that's bright!"

0) What Region/Country/State will the light be purchased in?

_X_I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.
_X_I am in North America. More precisely I am in Northern California.
___I am in South America. More precisely I am in _______________.
___I am in Europe. More precisely I am in _______________.
___I am in the Middle East. More precisely I am in _______________.
___I am in Africa. More precisely I am in _______________.
___I am in Asia, Japan or Micronesia. More precisely I am in _______________.
____I am in Australia. More precisely I am in _______________.

1) Price Range: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I only want to pay $1-10.
____I can spend $15-30.
____I could spend $40-60.
__X_I am willing to spend $80-$120.
__X_I have no limit!

2) Format:

__X__I want a flashlight.
____I want a headlamp.
____I want a lantern.
____I want a portable spotlight.

3) Length:

____I don't care.
____1-2 inches. (Keychain sized)
____2-4 inches. (Pocket carry)
__X__4-9 inches. (Holster carry)

4) Width:

____I don't care.
____I prefer a long narrow light.
__X__I prefer a short wide light.

5) What batteries do you want to use? Alkaline batteries are easier to find and less expensive but don't pack as much stored energy and are don't work well in cold temperatures. Lithium batteries have long shelf life (10+ years, great for stored emergency lights) and are not as affected by cold but must be kept dry and are more expensive. Rechargeable start expensive, but if used frequently pay off quickly.

____I want common Alkaline batteries. (AA, AAA, C, D)
____I want lithium batteries. (coin cells, CR123, AAA, AA...)
__X__I want a rechargeable system. (an investment, but best for everyday use)

6) How much light do you want? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

____I want to read a map, or find a light switch, in a dark room. (5-10 lumens)
____I want to walk around a generally paved area. (15-20 lumens)
____I want to walk unpaved trails. (40 lumens)
____I want to do Caving or Search & Rescue operations. (60+ lumens)
__X__I want to light an entire campground or dazzle an intruder. (100+ lumens)

7) Throw vs Flood: Which do you prefer, lights that flood an area with a wide beam, or lights that "throw" with a tightly focused beam? Place an "X" on the line below.

Throw (distance)----------------------|------X----------------Flood/close-up

8) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims (like some LED lights). but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries.

____20 min. (I want the brightest light for brief periods)
__X__60-240 min. (1-2 hours) On max/high setting
____240-360 min. (4-6 hours)
____360+ min. (More than 6 hours)

9) Durability: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light.)
__X__Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood.)
__X__Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box.)
____Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Self-defense, Survival.)

8) Switch Type:

____I don't care.
____I want a sliding switch. (Stays on until slid back.)
__X__I want a "clickie" switch. (Stays on until pressed again.)
____I want a momentary switch. (Only stays on while held down.)

9) Switch Location:

____I don't care.
__X__I want a push or sliding switch on the body near the head.
__X__I want a push switch on the back end of the body.
____I want a rotating head switch.
____I want a rotating end-cap switch.
____I want a remote control.

10) Operational Modes: Check all that apply.

____A simple on-off is fine for me.
__X__I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
__X__I want multiple light levels. (some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a strobe mode. (blinks to show location.)
____I want a tactical strobe. (Flashes rapidly to disorient an opponent.)

11) Is it important whether the body is metal or plastic/composite?

____I don't care.
__X__I want a metal-bodied light.
____I want a plastic/composite light.

12) Special Needs: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Circle any below or write in your own comment(s).

____Red (night vision preserving) filter
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________)
____Waterproof – how deep: _____________
____Non-reflective/dark finish (stealthy/hard to find)
____Polished silver or brightly colored finish (for easy locating)
____Corrosion resistant or hard-anodized finish
____"Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
____Built-in second (or spare) lamp or filament
____Belt/Jacket clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Kobuton/self defense features
____Non-sparking Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

Alright so basically I'm looking for a 500+ OTF lumen flashlight, with maybe 3 modes (low/med/high), water resistant (waterproof not so important but would be nice). I don't like those long slim bodies with huge head. I like it a little more on the floody side.

A perfect flashlight for me would be the Fenix TK40, I love how the beam looks, but the only thing keeping me from buying it is, it's not recommended to run it on max for more than 15 minutes.

I don't really have a budget, I'm willing to pay $200+ IF I think it's worth it. I bought this flashlight here: http://tacticalhid.info/led-store But I'm not happy with the quality and the run time (only 42 minutes).

Thanks

Check out this review of P7/MC-E/SST lights, and also this, they all appear to put out 500+lumens OTF. My personal favourite will have to be the Thrunite Catapult...

But if you love short and stocky, how's this for size?

Remember, you don't have to buy just one... lovecpf

Solarforce L2P ($35) + Nailbender SST-50 WJ bin 3 mode dropin ($75) + Flashlightlens.com 26.8mm UCL. Total around $120, tested at 470 OTF (by far the most you'll get for a 1x18650 light, at or near the top for even a 2x18650). Small enough to pocket, AMAZING build quality with HAIII and great CS from all three sources.

It's a perfect mix of floodyish light in a white\slightly yellow tint. Absolutely perfect for the features your looking for.

Sadly, I've decided I want a superthrower instead, so I'm selling that light for $105 in brand-new condition at http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showthread.php?t=211515. I guarantee I'm not simply recommending it because I'm trying to sell it, it's simply the best possible option - check around, I researched like crazy before deciding on it. It can be slightly beat in output by several 2x18650, but the difference is unnoticeable in real life, and the super small light + head assembly is awesome - I EDC it.

Sadly Josh, I can get more from an 18650 light. Three problems holding you back - drop-ins don't have a good thermal interface: they'll can be really good but to climb up on the knife edge you need something better than a slide in copper ring. Resistance - can't expect 3A to run through tiny springs of most drivers and tail-caps: hotwire guys hit on resistance mods a long time ago. Power supply - not every 18650 is equal.
But you are correct that there are limits to an 18650: 1Amp draw may last for some time, 2.8Amp is a big request.

>>MG PLI w ssr-50. Nice lines, head not much thicker then body. Decent hotspot but not intense, easy twist back of the bezel to back off the focus and get more flood. Most efficient driver (8x7135). I've got tailcap readings over 2.7A (at which jtr's whiteledtesting lower binned demo sst-90 led cleared 800 lumens)

a ssr-50 modded MG RX-1, 3 levels, driven 2.8A on high (far higher than people are getting with thrunight catapult)
The RX-1 is designed as a superthrower, he'll get a light with nearly as much output as the 2.5A SST-50 + L2p, but it'll be focused into a tight beam, be much more expensive, and be far larger. It's exactly what I'm doing now (only with a DBS), but he said he wanted flood instead of throw.

Wait until after the Shot Show. There will probably be alot of choices coming soon.
True. There will be more stock options, which means you'll have similar output and features but a lower price. A stock light still won't beat a custom combo, but you'll probably be able to pick up a SST-50 flooder with 400+ OTF for $70-80 instead of the $120 for a custom.

i'm lost. whats the Shot Show?

Basically, it's a big trade show where all the manufactures unveil their latest products. Think CES, but for flashlights instead of electronics.

Any flashlight that puts out 500+ OTF lumens will get hot if not cooled with your hand, or a fan etc airflow.

It will get hot if cooled with your hand, and very hot if not. But some lights are built to take the heat; some are not. I've run my SST-50 down to nothing (I'd be willing to bet that it's actually putting more OTF lumens then the TK40) while letting it sit in 86F ambient room, and it got blazing hot but no problems with the light over the full hour long discharge.

Thanks for the replies!!!:D

Nice, I'm currently reading that review, I like the looks of the Thrunite Catapult, too bad it isn't floody.

I need one soon though, so I'll buy one now, and maybe another after Shot Show.

Nice, I'm currently considering it. I still need to look around.

Just a thought, if you get any dropin or light with a removable pill, wrap it good in a conductive material (copper or aluminum; a pop can with sanded surfaces works well) so you have to force the reflector in with a fair amount of force. This will greatly improve thermal transfer and keep output from dropping, as heat is conducted out of the LED much more efficiently. It also removes the risk of frying the LED.

TK40 vs your L2P SST-50, winner gets them both?
Measurement taken after the output levels?

Looking at all your criteria, I think the closest fit is an Olight M30 Triton.
I have one and am very happy with it.
You can use 2 18500s without its extender.
That way its a relatively compact light, more so than the other really high powered lights in the same class.
Its beam is also more of a flood than the catapult and the other high-powered throwers like the Jetbeam M1-X.
You'll certainly elicit many "wows" when you light it up on high.
The output is 600+ out-the-front lumens.

No one here has an IS any more, or I would have sent mine to mrgman for a personalized reading and convinced something with a TK40 to do the same, since I was very interested in comparing the two. The next best thing is current.

TK40 = 2h on 8x1.2Vx2400mah = 23040mah / 2h = 11.52 watts/2.74A @ 4.2v
SST-50 = 1h on 1x4.2Vx2600mah = 10920mah /1h = 10.9 watts/2.59A @ 4.2v

A high-binned MC-E has 15-20% fewer emitter lumens per watt compared to a WJ SST-50, meaning that the SST-50 will be producing approx. 10% more emitter lumens at the given amperage. Coupled with the fact that the TK40s 9.8k lux vs. the SST-50s 4.5-5k means another 5-7% loss due to the deeper reflector design.

Like I said, it would be close. Too close to tell without a calibrated IS. But my money would be on the SST-50

Either way, I do prefer the form factor - 1x18650 works much better then 8xAA, and the light is much smaller. The SST-50 is slightly cheaper, though ($120 to the TK40's $135).

Then again, I own a SST-50, so I would likely tend to be biased. And most of the numbers above represent datasheets and ideal testing conditions, so they should be taken with several large pinches of salt.

Which SST-50 do you have? I don't see one one the Solarforce website

I'm sure we'll find an IS, do you accept the bet?
Of course not. I'm in no financial position to bet on theoretical conjuncture, and the cost of shipping would put me at a net loss if probability is included. Find someone with an IS to try the TK40 and I'll pay for the shipping 50\50 just to see if it's over 470 lumens

I had Nailbender build me one, it's the same thread you posted on asking about the C aluminum bodies :)

As already mentioned, I'd wait until the shot show is over - 4sevens is supposed to be launching his Maelstrom lights (SST50? SST90? MC-E?) which should be in the 500+ lumen region, hopefully.

I'm really curious what will be launched!

I would suggest the Malkoff MD3 or MD4 Wildcat.
