I've always liked the interface that LRI has delivered with the Freedom and the Proton. Since the Freedom runs off 2xCR1016 coin-cells, yielding 3-volts, I've been experimenting with different housing's that will allow me to utilize the Freedom light to drive it from a CR123 cell. In doing so, the raised a thought. If the Freedom and Proton basically use the same interface, is there any reason the Proton would not properly run from one of those rechargable 4-volt AA-sized batteries? I'd rather not just try it, without having some assurance that it may work without causing damage.

After reading this, I tore apart one of my old Photon Freedoms, attached some copper wire to the positive contact to reach the top of the battery and stuck a CR123A on there (I put a neodymium magnet on the negative side of the CR123A because it was recessed) and it lit up. All of the functions worked perfectly.

Great idea. I might have to make up something more permanent.
