Peter, all (3) of mine are on their way back. None of them work with SureFire cells and only one of them will work at all with a Duracell cell, but then starts flickering and dies.

Look inside the head at the area around the gold button.
If it's a green circuit board it's a 400.
If it's brown its a 500.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">None of my three work with SureFire batteries but they do work with both Toshiba and Sanyo batteries.
I'm thinking that the new 123 battery pack is the culprit because the SureFires do work when I use them with the "clickie" pack.

The old style 123 pack had a raised nipple on the bottom while the new style has an inverted nipple on a raised pad.
Not sure why Arc made the machining even more complicated but it looks like they created a new problem when they solved the unscrewing problem.

Mine was having similar problems, not coming on, or flickering a bit, but I happened to unscrew the top (exposing the board, which was quite interesting looking), screwed it back on, and now it seems to work, and work well! I am quite happy with this!!

As alluded to in other posts, the battery pack has a different protruding or contact area at the bottom of the bore. It seems a bit wide for some batteries, so the plastic sleeve casing contacts possibly, instead of the metal.
Mine works fine with Surfire batteries, and 2 other brands. Different screw on pressure is needed on the different branded batteries.

I got mine today and I'm very impressed with it! No problems with the beam, and just a few tiny scratches/marks on the finish. I only have the one type of battery to use with it (Photo-Cell) but it works perfectly every time.

Now all I need is the 2AA holder (now why didn't I buy it at the same time... DOH!)

Ooo...$78 bucks, it kills me, but I'm sure this is the best deal on an Arc LS, S or otherwise, I'm ever going to see. And, I desperately want one, and, like Thomas, I just don't think I'd ever be up to $150 for a first (w/ AA holder & shipping).

Hope it's nice enough to get good use out of, and I'll hope for a 400mA one without a green tint. A purple tint would be kind of cool.

I did some more playing before I sent mine back and found that it was more than just the battery brand that mattered.
Mine would work with brand new Toshibas and Sanyos but not with used Toshibas and Sanyos.
A used Enerizer also wouldn't work.
It looks like a lot of the 123 batteries get dented on the negative terminal as soon as they're installed in something.
This dent looks like the determining factor in whether it will work in the new Arc tailcap.
Used batteries from my old-style Arcs where the nipple left a good sized dent definitely wouldn't work in my new Arcs.
Batteries out of my E2 and E2e also wouldn't work because they too had good sized dents.
The only used batteries that I could get to work in this new style Arc were those that came out of lights with springs in the ends.
Used Sanyos from my Scorpion and used Toshibas from my Arc clickie both worked.

There you go..perhaps Peter should consider a small spring in the packs? It's an easy fix for a frustrating problem. One who buys a new torch shouldn't have to go out and purchase a spring? Guess I'll be contacting Maglite for some "replacements".

After reading these posts, you guys have convinced me. I am going to get an Arc LS for a special person as a Christmas gift, the smaller the better, and so hence was ready to jump at this offer. But I think I'll take the better safe then sorry road and get an E1 with a KL1 head.
