Peter, given the obvious demand, I think you should run them all through an auction. This is definitely a classic supply and demand problem and you should try to recover as much as you can of your capital expenditures (which probably far exceed the run you were able to finally produce). This product is effectively a limited run custom light.
Not as nice a price for those of us who want an LS3, but best for Arc LLC. This would also allow the sale to be fair in access and happen over a period which is long enough for those who wish to participate to actually do so.

Hmm. Everyone has a different opinion I see. The straight sale on saturday morning would be the easiest but who got it would be mostly up to chance. A lottery would have similiar odds but still offer little control to those wanting the light. The auction would allow people to have more control over their chances.
I like the auction personally. These things weren't cheap to make and the money would help. That is the honest truth.

you maybe don´t need to do 35 single auctions - at least on Ebay there is a type of auction where you sell X quantity and the final sale is going to the x highest bidders - you can always check for the highest bid total and the highest bid still getting one light - this way its the easiest and best IMO - you can also specify how many single parts one bid can be meant for - means you COULD (I think you shouldn´t maybe) allow one bidder to bid for more than one.
Doing an auction you might be able to gauge the interest in an ARC 5W LS w 2x123 config and possible when seeing for what they sell for be convinced to continue building them - which I still believe would be a good decision for your company - but what do I know

I hope I'm not being a bother by posting again. Because of my economist thinking, my initial reaction was that all these lights should be put up on auction because they would go to those who value them most highly, rather than to those most deft at accessing Arc's server in the half-minute or so for them to disappear. This would also benefit Arc by allowing the company to extract more the full value of the products. But because a number of people would state that they could not pay more than $200, the split of sale and auction seemed like a good idea to me to keep the peace.
Since Arc really could use the extra money afforded by an auction of all units to help offset R&D expense, then perhaps auctioning all units is the way to go.

EBay has a feature they call "Dutch Auction" which would fit your need. You list the number of items you are selling, set a minimum price and duration of bidding. With eBay's dutch auction methodology, the bidder bids the maximum he is willing to pay. When the auction is over, everybody pays the same price (if there are 20 bidders for 10 items, the 10 highest bidders get the items for the lowest bid of the 10 high bids). In other words, the 10 highest bidders pay the 10th bidder's bid.
I would suggest that you break the auctions down into smaller lots so as to maximize the resulting winning bid (and give people more time to take a shot at winning one).

- and some zero-cost advertising for Arc Lights
- if you watch the bidding closely, you could judge the desire for more of those and a possible price ... because never say never again in business
- and because you are a real friendly man: it would be the fairest way possible, as indicated above.

I agree with the auction idea as well. Keeping ARC going is in everyone's best interest and if people are willing to pay the buckos for a super limited item then so be it. Both parties get what they deserve.

I think you should auction them all. I'm sure you can use the extra dollars and besides getting the most profit is the American way.

I agree with the last posts. Since you made a public statement about how you are going to sell the units, you should go through with what you said. For some folks, like me, that may eliminate any chances of getting a light but it would be unfair to change the rules.
To not complicate the issue any more than necessary, do what you said you would do and sell them all at your specified time.
