Which of these lights do you think would be more appropriate for edc? Will the Nitecore have similar throw to the Luma w/ turbo head? Also, can you see a big difference in brightness between the two lights?

At this very moment it has to be the Lumapower M3, do to the fact that all but three individuals have actually used the Nitecore Defender.

Until a mass release meaning more than say 100 people have the product in hand and am using it on a daily basis, a true and accurate testament can not be made about the Nitecore Defender.

I have an M3 on the way and from what I gather the engine is designed less as an output monster and more for flexibility, not helped by the fact that the emitter is a "lowly" P4.

The nitecore Q5 will have greater output (if the figures are to be believed) but a smaller head so it might be a close match with the lower-powered, turboheaded M3.

I've had an M3 from the very beginning and later I also got the turbohead when available. I find it a very nice EDC light, mostly in the 1 x 123 configuration and without the TH that makes it a bit too large. It was designed as a flooder with several options as to batteries and even with the TH and smooth reflector it can't IMO been considered a tactical light or a thrower.

The Defender on the contrary is a light designed for different purposes. Mine of course is still to be delivered so I can't compare the two yet but I am not expecting a real EDC light.

Is there a specific reason that you're looking at the Lumapower M3. It's fairly big IMHO to be a truly good EDC (that of course depends on how you're planning to use it). The single AA-configuration is significantly larger than other AA-lights, and the CR123 is about the same size as regular AA-lights (when regular CR123 lights usually are smaller). And it wasn't top of the class when it came to brightness when it came out, and even less so now. But brightness and size isn't everything though, most M3 users I've read about have been satisfied customers.

The Nitecore Defender looks like a great light, but since only 3 reviewers have tested it yet (and only a preproduction sample) it's a bit early to pass a judgement yet.

Another option you might reconsider if you're looking for different configurations in the same light, is the Fenix-combo.

You can later get the L2D-body also if you want a 2AA-light.
And don't forget the CPF-discount!
Good luck.

I wish fenix offered a turbohead for its LxD/PxD series. I'd be all over it and it would likely be a decent thrower with those Q5 emitters.

That's why I ended up getting the M3 to try out... I wanted a decent turbohead to use on an AA body for traveling but if the fenix Q5 with the smooth reflector outthrows the M3 turbohead then the M3 will end up as an xmas gift (unless I can find a better emitter for it).
