I have a Maglite 3D with the xenon bulb upgrade. It's pretty dull for such a big light. I was wondering is it worth buying an LED upgrade to make it brighter or should I sell it? If i should upgrade it, what is the brightest upgrade with the farthest throw and whitest light. Mind you I don't want to spend much since I could just buy another light.

The only upgrade I'd buy would be Gene's. Really, it's one of if not the best available on the market next to doing your own modding. Make sure you get the XP-G version.

Either get the Malkoff mod, or buy a new MagLED with the Rebel emitter (images here). The Mag drop-in LED is outdated and not worth buying today.

I would sell it for $15 before black friday and pick up an LED version at Lowes black friday sale

I know that you asked about an LED upgrade to make it brighter, I concur with the other posters, might not be worth it. However, a very inexpensive upgrade option, for ~$8 (two PR-base Pelican bulbs, a -H & a -L) @ four alkaline C's, I bumped up a Mag 3D to ~250 lumens or so, not too bad for a budget upgrade. Stock, the Mag3D does ~75 lumens or so (Krypton bulb). Maybe ~125 lumens with the Mag Xenon bulb perhaps?

If you want to convert it, check this thread out.

As for output, my guess is 60-70 lumen from the xenon bulb at most by comparing the watts used by the krypton bulb for the output to the watts used for the xenon.

For a modification that's only $ 8, I'm very interested in this.

After reading this post and then reading the other thread that you cited, I'm don't understand where to find or purchase a "PR-base 4.8v Xenon Pelican 3753-H" bulb. I typed different variations of that into google and couldn't find anything.

Long before I found CPF I was doing 4C into 3D lights. The 3 Cell bulb still has pretty good life on 4C and gets a little whiter and brighter.

Mag bulbs SEEM to be the best commonly available.

Also do what you you must to center up the bulb in the reflector. You can get a pretty good spot if you work at it.

I have a 3D Mag made by someone else with a heatsink and Q5 LED running in a MOP reflector driven by 3 12000 Titanium NimH.

It has a pretty tight spot with GENEROUS spill but doesn't blow me away like I thought it would.

I have a 2D Mag with a P7 and 8 level driver on 3C NimH that DOES blow me away.

And I have an Elektrolumens MT3 with three SSC P4 on 3 NimH C that ain't half bad.

But try a well centered 3 Cell bulb on 4C and get back to us.

Sorry, I had re-posted later in that thread with a clarification, Pelican categorizes that bulb pack as the 3754, but the -H inside is labeled 3753-H.
Also, that purchase link is a good one, they have good customer service.
