Are they the top selling *quality* flashlight that is mainstream (Available at all these stores and more: K-Mart, WalMart, Target, Bi-Mart, etc.)?

If not the top selling quality flashlight at these stores and more, in your opinion, what other flashlight would you offer up that is better? (remember, must be available at these stores)

Do you own a Mag Lite?

Why are Mag Lites the #1 mod host here?

Re: Mag Lites #1

Inexpensive, readily availible, solid bodies, standard size, and they are pretty easy to mod.

Re: Mag Lites #1

Because they need all the help they can get /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously it's probably because the build quality is pretty good compared to other mainstream flashlights.

The only thing that really lets Mag Lites down is their beam quality & brightness, which can be easily rectified with a quick mod /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Mag Lites #1

I'll try any flashlight for modding, but here in Buenos Aires, there is not much variety in aluminum bodies.

And Maglites AA are usd 20 a pop... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Cheers

Ooops double post, sorry /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Re: Mag Lites #1

Mags did get me interested before I knew about some other manufactures. Still like them, well sort of.
This may have been discussed before, but anyone have experience with MiniStar TLE5 ?
How does it compare to an Opalec New Beam?

Thanks for any input /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

nekomane,

At the risk of taking this thread off topic, I'd recommend a Dat2Zip sandwich over those in the link you posted. I think the MadMaxLite 1w drop-ins are down to $30 now?

Jon

Re: Mag Lites #1

Thanks Jon, I'm a bit confused with all these sandwiches /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
I'll note your advice /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Excuse me for the OT /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Mag Lites #1

Basically what the other guys said. Very well made, good designs, but not up there with current LED or "tactical" light technology. State of the art circa 1984. Considering the prices, probably the best value out there if that's your main concern.

Re: Mag Lites #1

Maglite is the White Zinfandel of quality flashlights. Typical ticket to entry, then only trotted out for picnics, etc once more sophisticated tastes are developed.

Re: Mag Lites #1

Mags are not cheap at all down here in the land of Oz -- a 3D sells for at least $65AU (that's about $50US).

Sure they are made well, but at that price?!?

I just ordered a Blaster 3P from Wayne at Elektro Lumens. It isn't much more than a Mag is down here, so it blows it out of the water.

Re: Mag Lites #1

The Mag reflectors seem to work very well with LEDs. Another reason why they get chosen for mods.

Re: Mag Lites #1

I own almost a dozen M*gs (not counting 2 modded Minis). I have had all but 3 or 4 since the 80's when they were "The S&*t". I have bought a 2C and a 3C for hot rodding, a Red 3D 'cause it was CHEAP, and was given a Blue 3D for Christmas 2002.

Not a single one is stock. Most have an extra battery (4C instead of 3D for example) and either an Acrylite Lense or Writeright Film on a stock lense. The 2C has the defacto 3x123 and a KPR112 mod, while the 3C has 3x123+1AA Lith driving a 5 cell bulb BRIGHTLY!

OH, and my EXCELLENT Space Needle II is built on a 2C.

They are the best COMMONLY available light. But nowhere near the BEST light.

Re: Mag Lites #1

Hey abtomat what is that light in your signature and where can I get one? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
