Mag switch question

I keep looking at my Mag 2D and seeing thre D cells or nine AAs in it.
The Mag switch takes up a ton of room and it seems that it could be eliminated with ease.
Modamags 3aa to D converter could carry the negative end of the pack by running a wire and a modified tail switch could service that or regular batteries.
Has anybody done this?
Am I missing something?

A ton of Mac's Mags have tail switches connected to the negative termal spring. Check out of his custom lights, He uses a Judco 10A switch from Digikey. sp?
