Im new to the whole modding flashlight world. What is the best mod to start with for a big maglight? Brighest? best band for the buck? and cost? I have been lookin all over this site and there is so much info it is almost confusing. Thanks

Depending on what Mag you have (assuming you already have one), an ROP can be a very cost effective and reasonably bright setup.

P7 mods are also fairly popular, and there should be at least a couple guides that you can find via the search function.

But what kind of output are you looking for? There are even brighter incan setups than the ROP, but they can get a bit pricey.

I am looking into the P7 Direct drive it doesnt seem that difficult or expensive... maybe about 60 bucks for two? not including the host... only requires two solders and no circuit board

either way, you are into high current draws and you need to use rechargeable batteries because they can deliver the power.

For the ROP, AA rechargeables will work, or lithium rechargeables like 18650's.

For the p7, 3aa's or 1 18650 battery if its direct drive (no regulator)

18650's are available at deal extreme, lighthound, kai domain, etc...
try the DSD charger from DX. It's like 7 bucks and has great reviews

As I have said before, I feel that the most cost effective ROP is one with a 2D maglite and the 26650 cells from batteryspace. You get nearly an hour of runtime with the 3854H bulb, and nearly 2 hours with the 3854L bulb. The cells are rated for 10A continuous discharge, so they can easily handle the ~4.4A load of the 3854H. The cells are also only $13 each, and you don't need a battery holder as you would with AA cells. You do have to get a little creative with charging, but setting up some simple charging adapter is not expensive.
If you use the 3853H, you can probably get over an hour of runtime.
