Hey guys, I have an old (5 or so) maglite 2d that just isn't living up to my standards anymore. I was wondering if there are any around the house (as in don't spend any money) mods i can do to it to make it more functional or a bit brighter. It seems that it used to be brighter, or maybe i'm just used to LED lights now. Either way, i want to improve it.

Haha, well a few dollars, but i'm currently unemployed. Haven't bought a knife in a while either! I'm deprived.

if you already have 6 nimh batteries the cheapest mod would be about $9. $4 for 2 3aa-d adapters and about $5 for a 5-cell magstar bulb. Very bright and runs about 2 hours. This was my very first mod and was happy with it. Still use it to walk the dog.

I have two TerraLUX TLE-5EX flashlights modded. One with the Niteize IQ Switch and one with the stock tailcap. I want to do something better than that.

I'm not sure how much an ROP-lo would cost, but just a note - if you're thinking of getting some brighter incan bulbs into it (which I'm assuming since you posted this in the incan forums), there's no way you're gonna do it for free, unless you have metal reflectors and UCL/Boro lenses lying around. Once you get bright enough, it'll just melt the old lenses/reflectors.

Ok, so lets say i want to make this thing worth my time and labor. What would I need to get to make it a decent light? I love my terralux minimags but i want something that will go brighter and farther.

A glass reflector doesn't cost much - definitely less than ten bucks
A pair of ROP bulbs is also less than ten bucks
An aluminium reflector can be found for around 15 bucks
I'm not too sure on the price of a battery holder

The 4 things I listed are all you need for a decent output - pretty simple to put together and get working.

Here's a couple of useful links:

What he said, and be smart and try to get everything at the same place if possible to save on shipping costs, don't worry about paying a few extra bucks if your saving 6 on shipping.

Could the OP throw in an MR16 50w and do away with the reflector altogether? (fairly inexp...except for the new cell config that he'd have to be creative with)
Possibly build some sort of copper-tubing triple-stack AA cell holder so you could get more than 2x Series...at the expense of runtime, I guess.

Just a thought.
