Maha C401FS charger question

I don't see alot of postings about this charger on the forum, and the ones I do see are not too positive. I have this charger and have always used the FAST setting when charging my AA and AAA cells. The cells get warm but not too hot to touch, etc.

Is FAST the 'best' setting for optimal battery performance, or is there a need to sometimes use the 5-hour SLOW setting? I've got 8 eneloops on the way and plan on using the FAST setting with those also.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to CPF kymarkh.

There is a conversation going on in this thread that directly speaks to your query:

You will note there are a range of positions expressed as to the optimum charge rate for NiMH cells, with each explored in detail.

While reading the referenced thread, it may be helpful to know the MH-C401FS appears to primarily rely on negative delta-V (-dV) to terminate its charge.

As well, it's fast charge rate is 1000mA which would be deemed 0.5C for the Eneloop AA cell; and its slow charge rate is 300mA, which would be deemed 0.15C.

I note it also incorporates a 50mA trickle charge, which is a bit aggressive for the low self-discharge Eneloop, so you probably shouldn't let them sit in the charger for prolonged periods after the primary charge terminates:

Thanks Bones. I'll keep using the FAST setting and try to remove the cells as soon as the status lights go green.

I love my 401 and use it for travelling cause it's so light and it has a LOW setting which doesn't heat up my cells.

Also note.....never charge cells in it with the plastic lid on!

Very good point respecting the lid.

It's actually been eliminated in the latest release to ensure against over-heating, which is sort of regrettable since it helped keep the cells and charger all in one place while traveling.

Thanks again for the input. I agree, the 401FS is great as a travel charger as it is small, has a lid, and charges pretty fast. I've never really used the slow setting.
