Making a portable USB power brick

Hi all,

I'm looking to create a little gadget to regulate my LiIon battery pack (magic shine 2s2p pack) to 5 volts, so I can power some USB gadgetry.

According to what I've read, if I go for a linear regulator, then I have to worry about heat and efficiency. Because of that I'd like to use a switched regulator.

I'm feeling a little lazy about it though, and the Dimension Engineering 10 Watt adjustable regulator (http://www.dimensionengineering.com/DE-SWADJ.htm) looks like a good option.

I find it hard to believe so few people want this. I can turn my cell phone in to a great wifi-hotspot when I'm on the go. Or put it in my pack, turn on the GPS logging, and not have to worry about draining my 911 device while riding.

Is there a better/cheaper way to accomplish this? Ideally something I don't have to fabricate custom PCBs for. I noticed the Uno Fueltank does a similar job, but probably with fewer, smaller capacity batteries.

Thanks,

- Dave
