i had to work with this makita light again and i have had enough.
it has a really good mechanical design (tilt able head, same packs as the drill..) but the output SUCKS.

It uses a 7.2V 1500mAh NiCd-pack (=10.8Wh). The head has a inner diam. of 55.5mm.
i thought about putting one P4 with a tight refl/lens in the middle and 3 or 4 with a very wide angle around it for a big flood.
Is P4 the best led for this mod? is there a good DX/KD driver? (i want to keep it cheap on this one)

Cutter has a triple pcb with matching triple optics at 50mm as well as some smaller individual pcb.s and optics. Unless you need a throw monster, the narrow is not to narrow, the medium beam is good as a work light, and the wide beam has no throw and is only good as an area light. You can get the pcb pre loaded with 3 r2s(expensive) or buy some q5s emmiter only at dx or kaidomain (a lot cheaper, but more difficult and you have to wait longer), Then you need a driver to control your 9.6v source. Kaidomain has their sscp7 (3A) driver as well as a cree mce (2.7A) driver. Each of those is ~ 12$ and runs on 5.5v-15v. Before you do all this, make sure the pcb fits the head at depth behind the lens as there are other triple pcb's that have smaller form factors. If you get into more than 3 leds then you will start to under drive them unless you start using multiple drivers but don't let me stop you (or even slow you down!).
Good luck
