Malkoff P7 Drop-in, very impressive

I originally ordered a P7 for a C cell maglite, but decided the D cell drop-in would be easier. After talking personally with Mrs. Malkoff I was able to return the C for the D. I received it about a week later.

I was able to drop it in tonight for the first time. I took it outside tonight and was very happy with the beam and brightness. I shot the beam up into the sky and it reminded me of the aerial beamshot of the Dereelight MCE beamshot.

My setup is as follows:

2D Maglite in gray
6aa to 2D Fivemega battery adapter
6 Eneloops
Malkoff cutdown reflector(provided with drop-in)
Stock Plastic Lens

I will have to talk to FM about getting another battery holder and glass lens.
 
I was just reading on how to post pictures, sorry no beamshots, not signed up on photo-posting website, ie photobucket. I wish I could take photographs as well as some other members.

I have to admit I'm a little bit of wimp when it comes to running both my ROP Maglite and now my Malkoff P7 Maglite for more that 20 seconds.

I just went and got the light(P7) and turned it on for 3 minutes. Only a little heat coming from the lens area when I held my hand in front of the lens. The head of the Maglite wasn't even warm. My opinion is that Gene designed the heatsink very well.

FYI: ROP gets hot instantly

should be possible though or are there known issues with running the P7 for longer time? :thinking:

I am building a 2D - P7 myself (waiting for parts) and i want to run it longer than 3 minutes......
As long as you have a good sink i don't see a problem!?!
 
I got the Malkoff P7 last week, running it in a 2D host with 2 x 18650's. Also put some thermal paste around it for good measure. I did a run time test where it stayed on for about 1 hr 25 mins before shutting off. It was quite hot by then but no problems.

You can run the Malkoff P7 continuously until the batteries die. It will work fine.

Now that I have the blessing from Gene himself I will not worry about running the P7 for long periods of time.

I am hoping to pick up a Malkoff P7 soon, I have the same setup as this. I also have a 3D that could use a Malkoff dropin as well...:whistle:

how is the beam? does it focus well to a tight beam? what about the tint of it?
 
Has anyone tried this P7 with three 123 primaries? I've asked around but no-one else has tried it yet. I'm wondering how well and how long it would run or would it push the batteries too hard.

If it's using the standard maglite reflector, it should look like any of the maglites modded with a P7. At the tightest focus, the hotspot is a doughnut.
 
I have the same setup. The hot spot wiht the MOP reflector that Gene sends with the P7 can be focused down to give a good, usable hotspot with good spill. Kinda floody for long distance work. I took a SMO reflector out of another light and cut it down to Gene's specs and it throws amazingly. There is a small donut but with a 1/4 turn of the head in either direction, you can fade out the donut hole into a really nice looking spot. I am waiting for a FM 9AA --> 3D pack so no beamshots at the moment. I had mine temporarily running in a 6D host with simple Alkalkines and i was lighting up trees without a problem at 400 yards.:twothumbs
