I thought I had the proper Ushio replacement bulb for use in a Maxabeam as I thought others here on CPF had purchased before. Does anyone have a Ushio part number, photo of the bulb, box or any other helpful information about the bulb they used as a replacement? Below are pics of the clone bulb and the Ushio I thought was correct. The original clone bulb metal bases are both the same size. One end fits down into 12 "springy" contact fingers at the base of the reflector. The other end attaches to a sleeve with a spring in it and then another small sleeve slides into that. This allows the focusing mechanism to function without allowing the bulb to drop out of the guide pin on the front glass.

The Ushio bulb bases are two different sizes, the one that is supposed to go down into the base of the reflector is too small and does not contact the 12 fingers. The bulb can't be flipped because it is DC powered and polarity sensitive, or so I believe based on what I've been told about DC HID bulbs. The overall bulb length is 5/16" shorter. The part number on the base is UXL75XE. With some machined parts, it could probably be made to work. I'm just after whether this is the bulb that others have used?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi BVH,

Lips already provided you with most of the info you need..

I only have a few remarks:

1: In your case, the Ushio UXL-75XE will give much better performance than the original bulb. You can read about that in the posts about OAD (Optical Arc Dissplacement)

2: The osram equivalent for the UXL-75XE can NOT ! be used in Maxabeam. The reason for this is the place of the 'belly-button' on the bulb: On the Osram the bellybutton is placed on the bulb-section of the quartz, much to close to the arc, and makes the Osram useless for the deep reflector in Maxabeam. The Usiho has it's bellybutton in the shaft of the quartz, just located above (or below if you want) the round bulb-section..

Regards and happy newyear !

Ra.

Hi guys

I managed to tweak the Maxabeam clone so it delivers a tighter beam. I reported my findings in this thread:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=181335

I simply inserted some washers under the bulb so it moves more forward in the reflector and this resulted in tighter focus.

I also have the Ushio 75W lamp and I had plans to make an adapter for it but never took the time to make it happen. My Supernova is still working well and I am interested to see if you can make an adapter.

This particular light I have, had 3 washers behind the bulb already. Using the focus knob, I can focus it to a fine spot and actually go beyond (in the forward-moving direction) where it gets larger again so I think the only way to improve this light is by modding in the Ushio.
