Hello, Folks.

I'm beginning to collect Ti-McGizmo lights and other Ti-lights possible.
I don't know if this is the right place to raise this question, but I'll post my Q's here to begin with.

Roughly, how many Ti-PD's are made so far?
I'm taking about Ti-PD, and Ti-PD-s only, with 6 or 8 flutes. (excluding bigger sized head, mule, lunasol, etc.)

Another questions here.

The piston inside the PD pack, - is it also Ti?

If so, is it also 6-4 Ti? or Grade 2 Ti?

I got the answer for the material used for the piston.

mine looks like CP.


But I'm still not sure about my 1st Q's.
 
There was some CP used last year in the pistons and some of the 1" OD parts. I did not try to keep track of what was what. The machine shop decided that the CP was more trouble in machining than the savings justified and has switched to 6-4.

I don't know how many of these lights are out there. I haven't kept track.

I'm not 100% sure that my piston is Grade 2 titanium.
Generally I could tell whether it's grade2 or grade5, by the color, or the surface texture, etc.
But again, not 100%.

Another question for LS 27.
I never disassembled LS27 myself. As a matter of fact, I don't even try.
I look at LS27 again and again, and cannot figure out how the head is assembled.
I do not see the bezel, but I see the oring outside of the lens.

Can anyone explain how this is done ??? :sssh:

The outer O-ring retains the window and all interior components are restrained by the window.

I think I kind of understand, but then...

1. do I take the outer oring out by disassembling the other end first?

2. is LS27 head weaker than other heads with bezels, in terms of structure, water proof, and so on?

If you want the retaining O-ring out. Take it out. It comes out real easy. It has to be removed to allow access to the window, window seal, reflector, LED's and MCPCB.

Why would the LS head be weaker and why would I design it to be so?

IMHO, going to the O-ring for window retention over a threaded bezel ring improves the integrity and structural/ functional design on a number of counts and that is why I went that route. The very front end of the head is solid Ti and not two threaded and mated parts. The window is closer to the front with this design and this means less choking on the spill and light loss. The window does not have a hard stop fore or aft which relieve any shock to it in the event of a good drop or fall.

I'm pretty sure all of the 27mm heads (save for the 27LT) have not had bezel rings, so it should be as waterproof and strong as the S27-PD/C, etc. From what I understand, the way the light is built (with an O-ring, lens, then another O-ring) actually makes that seal *more* waterproof as pressure increases.

I don't think I understand the structure until I disassemble it myself.

I'll be brave and take my chances to disassemble it, when I'm ready. :rolleyes:



I saw a few pic's showing the LS27 head disassembled in the threads, but still not clear in my head.

my biggest question is ;
How can all the parts inside the head can be restrained by outer oring when the diameter of the lens is same as the inner diameter of the head?
(when there is no bezel to give it a pressure?)

Am I too dumb ??? :thinking:

The drivers, and LED are held together by a screw and don't rely on any o-rings for retention in the head.

The reflector rests on either a relief cut out into the head, or on the LED pedestal.

An o-ring (we'll call this the lower o-ring) rests in a groove cut out just above the reflector and locks the reflector in place. This lower o-ring also acts as the base for the window.

The window is placed on top of the lower o-ring.

The upper o-ring is then wedged into another groove just slightly above the window and effectively seals the window against the lower o-ring.

Essentially what you have is a system that seals tighter as the pressure outside of the light increases. A secondary benefit is that the window is not mounted on anything hard (sandwiched between two o-rings) and is somewhat isolated from shock.
