McLux PR heads - availability

Are the McLux PR (not PR-T) heads going to be available someday again or are they phased out with the availability of the PR-T?
 
Another related newbie question - are the internal LED assemblies & bezels/heads interchangeable between one PR/PR-T head & another PR/PR-T head? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
 
Cyril, it all depends on if they are epoxied down (which most of them are) so they are not exactly interchangable. Even if they are not epoxied/AAed/ASed, it's not advisable to change them around.

I think the current "plan" addreses both of your questions in that what is curently on order is the new McLux Aleph-1 head. In appearance, it is a morph of the PR and PR-T. Internally, the integrated bulkhead has been replaced by the E-screw module. This new head is part of a more comprensive system which also will include essentially the rest of the flashlight should one want to use the parts. There are three battery tubes (1x123,2x123 and 1x17500) and the tail cap all designed and now in process. All components, by design, are compatible with the E series parts that are already with us. Ultimate fit and interchangability won't be verified until the limited production pieces are in hand and confirmed. This system and all of these components have been my most ambitious undertaking to date and I still don't know what or where any mistakes in design might be or how they may manifest themselves! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif McLux: Aleph 1

I love the modular concept and the Pelican M6 was a great experience. The LongBow has also been designed around a very similar concept. I wanted to integrate a modular concept into the E compatable realm and had been waiting for the right time to move forward. With the advent of some new reflectors both of my own design as well as the IMS offering, the pieces of the puzzle finally started to come together. A new, deep, 38 mm reflector pretty much demanded the use of the E-screw in lieu of an integral bulkhead. The exchange of the ES (E-Screw) module is not as easy or friendly as the other modules but it is exchangeable in the field if necessary. One has the mobiity of transporting the ES light engine from one head/ optic package to another.

Anyway, with limited resources, funds, time and attention span, the PR head has been placed on hold. If there is still demand for it after the dust settles with the new Aleph line or if demand is "demanded" strongly in the interum, more PR heads can easily be ordered and made. Wayne and I *think* we're having fun with all this stuff and we are trying to stay with the leading edge of this LED revolution and hoping that we are providing components for others so that they have hosts and options for builds that they want to make. If the PR or the PR-T heads have earned a more permenant place, hopefully this will become apparent and we can continue to make them available. Unfortunately, even though the production runs are small in scale, they can represent a significant (to us) investment if they are not all ultimately sold. I suspect for us to be succesful and able to keep moving forward, there will, by needs be residual demand for product no longer available. I think a good example is the original McLux. Certainly we ran out of these and there are still the occasional request for them but I think this final demand is fueled to a great extent due to the scarcity and another run would most likely see a fair amount of the parts having birthdays on our shelves.

This means that the Aleph head as well as the body and the tailcap are all interchangeable with e-series parts? So I could put the head on an E1e and equip it with the McE2S TK cap?

But there is one thing that isn't quite clear to me.

It seems that the reflector is held stationary in the head (in case I did get that right). Now, one uses a 5W Luxeon in this new head with E-Screw and needs to adjust the position of the LED (donut hole). Will that be possible, or is the focus already set because the shoulder of the E-screw bears on the reflector? But on the other hand, wouldn't the ground path through the E-can disconnected, if the screw is moved further into the head and a power pack with shoulder i.e. E1e/E2e is used? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Great observation! As designed, the ES does butt up against the reflector and it position, relative to the head can't vary by more than say .010 without too much of the sealing O-ring showing if it is backed out to allow for the typical .015" set back required for the 5W. However, the reflector is retained and can move forward into more compression into the front window sealing O'ring. It is my design intent as well as hope that both some "slack" in the reflectors chamber as well as adjustability of the ES will allow for both the Lux III as well as the 5W. I can do more experimenting with the prototype parts I have made but lack of time and the fact that the real test will be with the real production parts has me in a wait and see mode. I am having all of these parts made domestically by a long established machine shop who know what they're doing. The question still remains whether I knew what I was doing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Once I can evaluate the production parts, it is my hope that an appropriate spacer washercan be provided for 5W applications. I recently built my first PR head with 5W and noticed that too. Although, a ~0,6mm spacer was used, I could easily screw down the bezel completely, as if no spacer is used.

I missed your Q, sorry. In a reflector discussion that I took a major "dump" in today, I think I addressed your question. For brevity here, my goal is to make the Aleph system as comprehensive as I can and hopefully if these parts all work as intended and once I get my hands on some, I can blissfully spend the rest of the year making some lights along with the ocassional goofy mod. I do want and plan for a 1" OD, next gen McLux head as part of the program but since there are some late developments and options, I want to get a chance to review all of the options before I make a commitment. With the ES light engine, a 1" head will be real straight forward and simple (he hopes) to design and get in the works, once I know which reflector I want to use. OK, more beans to spill...... I am hoping to design around something larger than the so17xa since a bushing should be easy to impliment and allow for the option of using the so17xa.

I guess that the PR-T will work for what I want to do -if I ever get my stuff together /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif - but thought that the Pr head had more mass to handle heat from these 5W Luxeons.
Nevertheless I am looking forward to any news on the Aleph as it seems to be the next step in modular flashlight engineering - Lego for flashaholics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif

the McLux PR-T head is really made for the E1e, and IMHO the Aleph-1 isn't really a replacement for the little fellow. Maybe keeping at least the PR-T is a good idea, the PR is replaceable by the Aleph without much loss I think.

I think it's the opposite. I'd rather see the regular PR continued and the PR-T replaced by the aleph. I don't know if the escrew will have a sufficient thermal path for an overdriven Lux-V. This is where the mass and smaller number of physical interfaces in the PR head make it more attractive.

Maybe Don can comment on the heat sinking capabilities of the escrew/Aleph prototypes.
