Modding a Streamlight Tasklight 2-L

Folks,

I have one these that looks like it would be a breeze to mod by replacing the star board; would strongly prefer to replace the star only and not mess with the driver board, though. Has anyone done this? Stars I am looking at are:

Would either or both of these be suitable?

I would like to retain the 2 levels of output as well. With 2 new Cr123's I measure about 3.8 volts coming out of the driver on high and about half a volt less on low.

I am assuming that you have Streamlight 2L 3W.

If you use this one then you will need to add a spacer underneath the star board the thickness of a nickel or use a nickel. The other problem is the beam pattern will be ringy. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2395

Just got around to doing this mod this morning, with the DX #1445 star board. Worked GREAT. Just de-solder and then gently pry off the original star, affix the new one with artic silver or whatever your personal choice is in heat-conductive adhesive, re-solder, and you're ready to go. I have no way to measure the output but it is visibly brighter and the beam quality is extremely nice. The original driver board works perfectly, you still have a high and low mode as before. So, if anyone has one of these very nice lights laying around, go for it - the cost is next to nothing and it's a super-easy mod, great for a first-timer. Just make sure to get the polarity right!
 
It's good to see you modified your Streamlight, and you like it. You know you can run almost any battery combination...2- cr123, 2- rcr123, and 1- 17670 battery. I bored mine out to take 1- 18650, but you have to be very careful.

Thanks again - yeah, now I am running 2 rcr123's but may try a 17670.

It's funny, there are newer and fancier products, and I've got quite a few of those myself, but I still really like this light a lot.
