Guys,
After pulling apart a newer model Magllite I notice some key changes; important to know if you're considering using the handle in your mod.
Notice the difference in design for the positive contact in the black barrel. There is no spring on the new one, just a flat plate. Although the plate contact is closer to the edge of the barrel it is not proud, and will not make contact with an 36600 (D Cell) Li-ion. You will need to add something like a blob of solder to the positive on your battery, or a neodymium magnet no wider than 5mm diameter.
Also the grub screw is different. To get the internal barrel out we normally use a 2mm Allen key. Latest models have a grub screw that is a T8 Torx. You cannot readily see this until you pull it apart. Point being, if you find you're not getting any purchase with an Allen, then try a Torx.
Battery main springs are different but I don't think that is an issue.
I prefer the old models because you can carefully strech the small positive contact spring until it makes contact with your batteries.
