In actuality CHEAPER displays are dimmer. I have seen 22 inch CRTs brighter than most 17 inch. Many cheap brands don't have a good high voltage power supply and suffer from it. Later on they end up dim because they start out weak to begin with. My 17inch 1991 Iiyama was brighter than MOST 14-15 inch monitors made even after 7 years of use.

Thanks, I will try that in the future, although I rather go the lcd route. Guess its the same thing, a better lcd has brighter output than a poorer unit?

I did have severe vertical jitter problems with the original 19 inch sony hmd a 400
sony trinitron monitor I bought from circuit city.

it was 6 months out of warranty.
I never sent in the warranty card or any thing.

I used plannet feedback and complained to sony.

they sent me 2 newer but refurbed monitors.
both were duds.

the 3rd monitor they sent me was new and a even newer model.

I had huge boxes and monitors in my dining room for months.

the new monitor did not cost me a dime and it works great.

1940 x 1440 max rez

at 70 hz refresh.(I think)

I think trinitron monitors have the best picture.

it will be a while before lcd out preforms them.

it has been about 2 years now - no problems

sony and plannet feedback are great.

I have solved a lot of product problems this way.

I love the picture of my sony but the hassle of dealing with their poor service center and refurbished monitors really leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I am crossing my fingers on this second refurb from sony it wont die because the 3 year warranty is up in a few months on my original one.

I would recomend any flat screen CRT monitor with a dot pitch no greater than .24/5 & a refresh rate of at least 75mhz.
Flat panels are fashionable and give you alot more desk space but even the really expensive ones don't give you the pic quality of a decent CRT.
Avoid Shadow-mask monitors like the plague.
