My quest for the right light has boiled down to the lumins per amp question.

Are the new leds like the sst-50 actualy more effecient, or are they producing more light just by using more amps and mass in the emmiter?

I even had a thought that using three XR-E's could be just as effecient as one SST-50.....But surely not.

Well the whole thing seems very confusing to me.

Perhaps it would be less confusing if you compared watts used as light emitting devices are often compared using lumens per watt. Amperes are only part of the equation.
Volts * Amps = watts
lumens / watts = lumens per watt of light output.

There is another requirement and that is at what watt drive level. One LED may be very good at one watt but another may be better at three watts.

Also what is the application of the LED and the optics that is going to be used with it. Some LEDs are very difficult to generate a good useful beam due to the mechanical design of the housing the die is in and the shape of the die.
