Multi mode AA light using C or D cells?

I've been admiring flashlights like the Quark AA, LF5Xt, and NC D10 that can get wonderful results using a single 1.2-1.5v AA battery and I started to think, what would it take to get a super flexible light like that to run off of a single C or D cell? Obviously not ideal for EDC, but perfect for toolboxes, glove compartments, bug out bags, and anywhere else that utility and runtime trump sexiness.

First off, are there any multi mode, single cell C/D boost flashlights out there?

If not, how difficult would it be to adapt one of these AA wonder lights to a larget (but not higher voltage) cell?

It's not a C or D cell, but you might be able to run the Quark AA/2xAA/CR123A head on the 2xCR123A body with one of the thinner 4/3A NiMH cells (3800mAH) from batteryspace.

But even if the cell fits, I doubt there'd be any advantage over running the 2xCR123A head with a 17670 Li-ion.
 
The reason that I'm specifically interested in a single C or D cell multi mode flashlight is because I've got lots of mismatched C and D alkaline batteries sitting around in various states of discharge...can't put them in my 4C or 4D flashlights because I can't match them properly, but there's still usable juice in most of them.

Such a waste.

Guess I'll look into getting a boost driver from somewhere and building my own flashlight. Can anyone recommend a good primer for a noob custom flashlight builder?

Deal Extreme lists several boost drivers that are claimed to run on a single 1.5V cell.
 
Someone's got to start making AA, C and D bodies for the E01 (I know, not multi mode) or the LD01. 25/70/150 hours runtime? :paypal:

that's a very cool light. I need to learn how to build lights from components like that.
