I bought a soldering iron today - my very first!!

It's this one - it should be OK for the minor mods I'll ever attempt, won't it? It's 25 watts

Weller 25 watt - (I didn't buy it here)

Do you guys think it will be OK? Should I get a 40 W instead? Or what?

I'm all excited now - this will be my first mod!

Either the Elly modded with a 1 W Cree UV, or an Ultrafire C2 3 W Cree UV... still deciding!!

Thanks everyone!! :)

Get those that you can change the iron tips from fine to very fine. Fine for soldering normal mods, very fine for modding and soldering IC like those in Lambda Mini Pro Engine. Get yourself some flux too it helps in making good joints. Don't put a hole in the table, get a proper stand. 40 W a bit too hot. Good luck

25 watts is plenty for flashlight work. 40 watt irons are for chassis and tagstrip work. Weller is a good brand.

+1 on a stand.

I recommend multicore solder; it is self-fluxing and is kind to the bit.

One tip - every now and again, unscrew the tip and screw it back in, or else it will set in there permanently.

OK, good - thank you!!

Weller is good, 25 watts is fine.

I'll get a stand at Fry's - already on my list! :twothumbs

60/40 Rosin core solder and flux paste are on the list, too.

Are the tips that come with this iron OK then?

+2 on getting a stand, it could be as simple as a metal spring and sponge holder...but your table will love you for it:grin2:

buy a can of tip cleaner/tinner...a dirty tip can make my 140/100 watt solder gun look like a 5 watter [wont melt solder...sometimes it won't melt something as easy as Styrofoam]

I have 3 wellers....well 4 actually
25w, 40w, 140/100w, this little butane powered Popsicle god knows how many watts it is
