I've used a couple of Ultrafire 602c Q5 5 mode flashlights, connected to an external battery pack of 4 x 18650 in parallel for extended run time.
This is how I butchered the flashlights. My electronics is limited to what I learnt at high school when I happened to be awake.

Heres the next evolution

light, bright, not too expensive and should be great runtime on the 4 x 18650
i found that the best wire to run into the heads is some thin round very flexible 2 core, recycled from mobile phone chargers
