So I had nothing better to do and drew up something this afternoon.
Uses 2 cr123a's.
6 LED's for diffused light.
A single 1-3 watt LED for long distance spotting.
Both types of led's have their own on off switches.
The rotary switch on the right controls the brightness level of the main LED.
3-level battery level indicator. Blue led indicator indicates when the main led is on. The LED's are mounted on the underside so they should be visible in the upper peripheral of vision.
All the switches are big enough to be accessed with gloves on.

Looks interesting!

Few comments:

1) I would recommend recessing the 5mm LEDs a bit. I wear glasses, and if the LED emits light downwards, then it reflects off my glasses and is very annoying.

2) The battery indicator lights are in an interesting place. I hope they're visible without removing the headlamp and also not too bright so they're annoying.

3) For the 5mm LEDs, I'd recommend using a wide-angle (25-30 degree) LED with a good color tint. Maybe the ISP 100ma or SMJLED.

4) For the center 3 watter, you may want to use it only intermittently to spot objects far away, so it would be good if the switch for it was a forward clicky so you can use it momentarily.

5) I am wondering if the heatsinking will be enough for continuous use of the 3 watt LED. Maybe some ribs on the side or bottom might be good?
